THE HOME, VOLUME UP AND DOWN, SCREEN, SOUND, START, DONT WORK, EVERYTIME I INSERT A UMD THE SCREEN GOES BLACK BUT ITS STILL ON AND EVEN IF ITS SET TO NOT AUTOSTART IT DOES. I NEED MY PSP I TRAVEL 4 HOURS A DAY IN BUS!!
Well if it got hosed by water there is not much of a solution. If your are tech. inclined you can order the control board off of ebay for a fraction of the cost of buying a new psp. There are diagrams on how to disarm and rearm the thing best of luck to you.

Without a functional screen, the PSP doesn't have much of a purpose. If the power light next to your screen is off as well, all your PSP needs is a good long battery charge. But if the power light is on and the screen is still dark, a few quick troubleshooting steps can help you get to the root of the problem. If troubleshooting doesn't work, you will need to contact Sony eService through its support site, particularly if your PSP has recently been dropped or had liquid spilled on it. Step 1Turn off your PSP. Remove the battery pack. Replace the battery pack, making sure that it is securely inserted. Turn the PSP back on. If the screen is still black, continue to Step 2. Step 2Press any system button. If the backlight is turned off, pressing a system button should reactivate it. If the screen has turned back on, go to the PSP settings menu. Select "Power Save Settings." Select "Backlight Auto-Off." This option automatically turns off the screen if the PSP has been idle. If you do not wish to have this feature active, select "Off." If this step did not solve the problem, continue to Step 3. Step 3Press the screen brightness button below the screen. This button is marked with a small donut-like icon. Pressing the button will incrementally increase the brightness of the screen. Holding down the button will turn off the backlight. It is possible that this button was accidentally pressed down after placing the PSP in a pocket or a backpack. If the screen remains black after the brightness has been increased to full, continue to Step 4 if your model of PSP is any but the PSP Go. Step 4Open the top hatch on the PSP. This will eject the UMD disc. Only touch the UMD at the edges, as fingerprints can interfere with the disc's functionality. Clean the surface of the UMD with a clean, dry cloth. Do not clean the UMD with water or any other chemicals. If the disc looks scratched or damaged, this is likely the cause of the screen issue. Additionally, moisture can condense on the UMD if the PSP has undergone a recent temperature change, such as being brought into a warm house from a cold car. If the UMD looks wet, turn off the PSP and allow the UMD to air dry. Wait several hours before trying to restart your PSP.
f you are experiencing issues when using a Universal Media Disc (UMD™) on the PSP system, try these troubleshooting options:
Issues with PlayStation®Store contentClick here for help with content purchased from the PlayStation Store.
Restore Default Settings Restore Default settings will default the PSP system to its original settings. A setting change may be the reason the PSP system is having difficulties. Click here to learn how to restore default settings on the PSPgo / PSP system.
Confirm UMD is properly inserted
Make sure the UMD is properly inserted with the label facing the back of the PSP system. Try removing the UMD and reinserting it. Please note, it is normal for the PSP system to make noises while it is reading from a UMD.
For PSP-1001, slide the latch to open the UMD door. For the PSP-2001 and PSP-3001, simply lift the door open.
Try playing the UMD on a different PSP system If possible, try playing the UMD on a different PSP system. If the disc still does not function properly, it might need to be replaced. If the disc does function properly, the PSP system may need service, see PSP Service for details.
Try playing a different UMD on the PSP system If possible, try playing a different UMD on the PSP system. If another UMD plays, the original UMD may be the problem. If none of the UMD's play, the problem may be isolated to the PSP system.
Check for moisture Do not let the PSP system or any PSP® accessories come in contact with liquid. Also check for moisture condensation in the PSP system. If moisture condensation occurs, remove the disc from the PSP and do not use the PSP until the condensation has evaporated, which can take an hour or two. In general, if any part of the PSP gets wet, discontinue use until it is completely dry.
Check the regional code Check the regional code on the UMD™ Video. The only regional codes that the North American PSP® is tested to work properly with are "ALL" and "1. "

Hi. Since you're in UMD Autoload mode, you need to configure that in the PSP Settings. To do this, turn off your PSP and remove your UMD. Now, turn it back on and it won't autoload your UMD since it wasn't there anymore.
Now, go to "Settings" and scroll down to "System Settings" and press X. Scroll down again the selection until you see "UMD Auto-Start" and press X. At the right side will appear the options "ON" and "OFF". Select "OFF" and press O button several times to go back to main screen.
Insert your UMD. Now, try playing games from Memory Stick. You may have to turn off your PSP and turn it on again to finally play homebrew...
I hope this helps...
i have the same problem, you should get a psp case and it will stay closed. Get the one were you could still play your psp. Get a clear case. I have a hard clear case that goes around my whole psp except for the buttons in the front. It keeps the umd cover closed
your son probably dropped his PSP at the time and the UMD drive broke or if your son says he didnt drop it you can get a cutip and softly clean your UMD reader the little bubble sorta in your PSP be carful while doing that
This could be a very simple problem. I have seen so many PSP's with this problem. There is something stuck in the gears that move the PSP left to right. Most of the time it is a plastic piece that breaks off the door hinge. If you are good at taking electronics apart, you can do this in 10 minutes.
