Check the drive letter assignment for the disks, and make sure it is not the C: driver.
I am assuming you can boot and then plug the disk, right?
So use the Disk Manager to check the driver letter, and change it if it is conflicting with another disk.

I put 140G photos in my 500G WD element external HD. Now it is very slow and some files cannot be copied. What is the good way to get the data back? Thanks.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Windows wil not start with wd external usb hd 1.5t , if pluged after windows starts up everythings ok

Your system boot order may be USB first before then the internal Hard disk. So during system boot your system tries to boot from the USB which has a drive attached to it and since the drive is not bootable the system will stop. When you remove the drive the system will boot from the internal hard disk. This is normal just remove the USB and plug it after the system loads the windows files.

My computer hangs when I start it up until I remove the WD 320 GB External USB connection - then it will restart ok. I have to then reconnect the hd. - what can I do about this?

It sounds like it is trying to boot from the external drive, go into the BIOS settings and disable boot from external device and see if that cures it.

Wd portable hd - device attached to this system is malfunctioned

It could be that the Hard Drive inside the enclosure still works, not sure if you care about voiding any warranty as opening it up will likely do, but there is a very slight chance that the Hard Drive itself will let you get the data off it. I am not sure what the connector to the drive is on the inside though as I have not taken one apart myself, :).

WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.

Sabrent 5in1 USB-DSC5 doesn't recognize 2.5" WD hard drive

I have had a different problem with this product. But, I have read many postings on its problems. It seems that for certain hard drives the jumper should be set for something other than 'master', either CS or no jumper at all. This seems to be true for only certain HD's.

Hope this helps.
