Mac will no longer recognize hard drive. Drive does boot up and light comes on.

My computer won't recognize a WD My Book hard drive, though it used to. The hard disk spin up but seems to get stuck.

My drive isn't recognized and I hear a clicking noise when I first try to plug it in.

Same as, I want to access all my family photos on this drive and I am unable to do so, It is so disappointing as there is no rhyme or reason that I can see why this is not working. Light are on and no one's home.

I have a WD 500GB that I was using on our Mac. The lights on the external drive come on and I can hear the drive turning, but the computer no longer recognizes the drive. I tried the WD500 in a regular...

I've had this same problem - in my case it seems to have been dust. Disconnect the drive, then blow air into all of the vents several times. Use compressed air designed for electronics, if possible. This may bring it back to life.

WD is very good about supporting their products. The web site provides a place to enter a serial number and mode - they will replace it if it is still under warranty. Of course, your data will be lost if the drive no longer functions.

Either way, if you get it working, I'd recommend copying the data off to a another drive - this one may be going bad, even if it works for now. You should always have 2 copies of anything important.

Good luck.

My WD External hard drive is no longer recognized by my Mac. It was fine when I went to bed. Showed no warning symptoms that I am aware of.

Hi,

I would like to know the way the Drive is connected to MAC.
Have you connected it using USB or Firewire ?
If you have connected it using Firewire, Try connecting it using USB 2.0 Cable.

Let me know.

Regards,
Ron

My Book firewire not bootable on mac

I picked up a couple of My Books lately( via Ebay), and noticed that i can not get them to work on the Firewire interface with my Dual Core Intel Mac. Shows up on USB2.0 fine however.I found an online reference that said Apple changed some things on the Firewire interface year or two ago, and that vendors had to update their firmware (it related to Firewire devices reporting a unique ID to the Mac).
