Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
My problem was the magnet that is supposed to be in the black rotator that the DVD is placed had come out and was sticking to the top of the DVD drive lid... I opened up the XBOX 360 by removing the hard drive on the top first then on the sides of the XBOS you will notice air holes but if you look closer looking from the front of the box on the right hand side you will notice there are more holes then the left and side. I will try to put everything in steps and hope you understand them
1 - Removed the hard drive from the top
2 - Starting from the back pushing a pen in the side holes on the right hand side to unclip the Gray cover
3 - Do the same on the bottom to remove that Gray cover as well.
4 - Unclip the front white face cover and remove it
5 - you will see 4 cover clips on the front holding both side of the case together "unclip them BUT don’t force apart" there is more on the back
6 - Unclip the back by pushing the pen point in all the 7 small holes in the back THEN you can pull the cases apart
7 - Remove 6 long screws from the bottom then take the othe side of, Unplug the cables from the back of the DVD drive and lift it out away from the XBOX
8 - Unscrew the 4 side screws of the DVD drive and take the top cover off.
9 - Take the magnet of the top cover from the white plastic
10 - Use some very good adhesive glue on the black rotator wheel (not to much) wait for the glue to part dry for 3 or so minutes then place the magnet in where it belongs
11 - Leave overnight to dry (don’t try and hurry the glue or you will be doing this again.
-- ** now revers all the steps from 6 till 1 to put everything back together ** --
Mine is fixed now and I hope this worked for you (I did get it working sometimes by just keep opening and closing the draw) but this fixed it for good and now all is working well again

Had this same problem but it's temerpory..............keep closing it with the game control and not ur hands for a good 10mins, if that don't work do the samething without a disk in tray, and if all that fails unplug ur xbox 360 i'm talking power, control, hard drive, ethernet connecter, video/audio cords and put the xbox 360 in the orginal way u first pla it in vertical or horizantal and and connect back everything and it should work.

Unless it's passed its warranty or you don't feel confident enough, open up the xbox, and the dvd drive, (plenty of vids on utube). i found the problem was that there were 2 little white wires on the dvd motherboard that had not been soldered properly. I fixed that and found my tray stopped opening all the time.

Replace the dvd drive or warranty repair via MS support.

This is more than likely your laser that is dead and its possibly a samsung or hitatchi drive, be careful when
buying a new laser because there is a lot of dodgy ones around at the minute which can damage your machine or
at the very least will be inferior and not last long.
its very possible it could also be your logic board which is a controller that controlls your dvd drive and laser etc. if this is faulty (and im betting its a samsung) then you might have to replace. you can pick these up for swap with the one on your drive for around £10 and can be effective but i would also checj the drive belt and make sure that is tight and working ok and tha laser too.
if your 360 reads dvd's but not games it may be repairable but if it wont read anything then your better off replacing the laser. strip down the console and strip the dvd drive, take out the laser and look underneath it, it will have a code such as HD57 or something else, note that down. Visit ebay and search for the laser with the same code, buy it, fit it in and make sure you de-solder the static blob of solder before using it (search the net about this or ask the seller) and then try your machine again :)
