Note sure it it will fix the problem...What is "ic"?

  • dkahane Apr 23, 2009

Yes, it answered my question will let you know if we deside to try to fix it. The line is across the screen not up and down? does that mean it is a horizontal intergarted circuit?

    Thank you.

You have a vertical collapse. Not sure if its worth fixing because i don't know what type of set it is or how old. But vertical is not usually expensive to fix. Possibly just replace vertical ic

ic is intergrated circuit. 90% chance that is your problem. By the way, don't play your tv with the vertical white line. Can damage the set.

I'm sorry the wording is confusing. A horizontal white line is called a vertical collapse. You have a line going from left to right. This is the vertical IC gone bad or in need of resoldering.

Sounds like a problem with the vertical circuit. If yuo can solder and are comfortable with working inside the set, you may be able to repair this.

Keep us posted.

White lines

These are retrace lines. This may be a fault in the blanking circuits. On some occasions a weak CRT can also cause blanking lines to show.

This is something you would not be able to service yourself. I would suggest to have an estimate done on the TV set for you to decide if it should be serviced or not.

Line accross top of the screen with flashing black and white boxes

Thin white dashes on top of screen is PERFECTLY NORMAL. It is nothing wrong with the TV, it is the broadcast. What you are seeing is the very bottom of the timecode running. It doesn't happen all of the time or all channels. It usually happens with old 4:3 commercials predating "Digital TV." This is mentioned in your Users Manual. You should be able to adjust the horizontal/vertical position in the menu settings.

RCA 32V420T 32" TV

This RCA set uses the CTC187BD chassis. Look on the back of the set and to the right of the cable connector you will see 2 controls sticking out, one on top of the other. The top control is for focus and the bottom one is screen, or overall brightness. If these controls have been turned clockwise then you will have a bright, fuzzy picture with white lines (retrace lines) through it. Tune in a channel with white letters on the screen and turn the top (focus) control until the letters are crisp and sharp. Go into the menu and turn the contrast and brightness all the way down, and then turn the bottom control (screen) until you can just see the picture, just above the point where the picture is too dark to see. Go back into the menu and reset the contrast and brightness and the picture will be back to perfect.

White line horizontially through middle of picture

A repair like this is in the vertical drive/output section of the TV set. It could be a simple capacitor causeing this problem or a combination of the capacitor and the output IC. A repair like this should not exceed 120 to 150 US. Is it worth that to you? How much can you replace it for? Good Luck PS please dont forget to rate this thread.
