Microwave Oven Basic Troubleshooting Tips

If you are having problems with your Microwave Oven not working then you need to systematically go through these troubleshooting tips to figure out exactly why your Microwave does not work

The main thing to remember about microwave ovens is that they have large electrical capacitors inside them that can discharge lethal amounts of current even after they have been unplugged. Touching the wrong wire(s) inside, even after unplugging the unit can still be deadly. Make sure that you know how to discharge the capacitors or have a certified repair technician work on your oven.

The most common problem for the oven to not work at all is that the internal (thermal) fuse has blown. This fuse is there to protect both you and your appliance. It will be a simple fix for an experienced technician.

The door switch is another common problem. This switch is activated by the latch, and if it is broken the switch will not allow the oven to work.

If you can hear the oven running and it sounds normal but there is no heat then there is an internal problem with the high voltage circuitry or you may have a problem with the circuit board. Changing the circuit board or the high voltage components is something that you want experienced hands to do.

If it does heat but the power level will not change, then there is something called a triac (electronic voltage controller) that has failed. This also is a job for a qualified technician.

If the turntable stops turning, this is usually caused by the failure of the small motor that spins the turntable. This does not effect the heating but to replace this motor the cabinet needs to be open which will expose you to the hazards of the high voltage components. It is best to seek help to do this.

Intermittent heating problems are often caused by steam making condensation of the electronic components or a loose connection in the circuitry. If it is moisture the circuitry will dry out and work after some time. If it is a loose wire then it will need to be fixed by a technician.

If your unit microwave runs but is buzzing very loudly, then you have problems with the magnetron, the high voltage capacitor, or the power diode. These components are all high voltage components and need to be treated with great care. A good technician knows how to diagnose and repair them safely.

If you observe sparking inside the microwave, turn it off immediately. This can be caused by metal inside, or can also be caused by excessive food or liquid buildup. If it causes any burn spots you will need to have then repaired or fix them to have a safe appliance.

This will give you many of the basic causes for problems in a microwave oven. As you can see there is very little that an untrained person can safely do to repair this appliance.
This can however give you some idea of what to expect if you need to call a repair technician to work on your appliance.

Stopped working while cooking. Checked circet breaker in house, and not the problem. Does this unit have a breaker built in ?

Dead appliance, power on wall outlet.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT!

Attempt this only if you are competent.

If your appliance has absolutely no functions at all, remove it from the mains supply, remove the case and see where the mains lead goes in to the appliance and follow the cable until you find the main fuse.
ONLY USE THE SAME TYPE AND RATING OF FUSE TO REPLACE IT.
The usual cause of this fuse failure is the door switches are contaminated or sticking. Check the door switches before putting power back on to the appliance.
Hope this helps.

The fan on my emerson microwave model#mwg9115sl stopped working and now it shuts off by itself is there a way to fix it or someone who i can take it to?

The fan primary function is to keep the magnetron cool while it runs, if the fan stops the thermal fuse senses an increase in temparture causing the oven to shut down. I suggest a tv technician or appliance repair man because there is dangerous high voltage present that can cause serious injury or death.

We bought our house about 1 year ago and it came with a Whirlpool Microwave hood combination - model GH9176XM. It didn't work properly (wouldn't pop popcorn,etc.). The Sellers arranged for a repair...

Hello Case_reimus,

Problem is... (as an old radio-man sees it)
There is NOT a lot more "things" than the
MAGNETRON... to work with...!!

The sole source of ENERGY in the basic Microwave
is the MAGNETRON and if you are in love with the
idea of melting single pats of BUTTER... your NEW MAGNETRON will soon be the "problem"
again ... (excluding convection heat sources).

The nature of the high frequency is such that
less than an approximate cup of water... standard
measurement
TAKING 3 MINUTES to boil... !!

Will allow EXCESS RADIATIONS to be re-absorbed
by the MAGNETRON itself... causing extended
cooking times and PRE-MATURE MAGNETRON failure.

There is no finer type of recycling than to keep a
worthy appliance working beyond it FULL LIFE-CYCLE.

FIND MAGNETRONs on eBay, AMAZON...
and on-line parts houses...

No power - had a power failure and unuit no longer works

This happens a lot in power failures. Appliances experience a power surge just as the power goes off and can actually ruin appliances, big and small. When this started to affect our appliances, we contacted the manufacturers an they were kind enough to give advice and/or offer a repair at little or no cost. Try this and have faith....

Microwave will not work

Hello Carol95,
I would doubt that the heat generated from the cook surface beneath the micro caused any damage to the micro however the fact that you had a power surge is the more likely culpret. It is possible that a power surge took out an internal component, such as the magnetron, thermal fuse, filament transformer or something else but the cost of a repair call may warrant a replacement MW anyway. Why pay for a service call if all you will learn is that your MW was damaged from that surge? and the cost to repair would exceed the cost to replace.. There are virtually no servicable parts inside the micro that the homeowner should attempt to fix.. If you do not know what you are doing, you can get seriously injured or compromise the RF shield in just gaining access to the inner compartment. You might luck out and learn that the failed component is a simple and inexpesive repair ... so you weigh the risks..
Hope that helps you decide how to approach this..

Regards,
Rick

Microwave works but not spinning or light up

It can mostly be one or a combination of several faults. The power supply for the light and motor may be at fault, or the motor or light may have failed.

You can bring the oven in for a service estimate. If you are not experienced in this type of repair, I don't recomend you do it. There are safety issues involved with these appliances.

Microwave/small appliances do not turn on when plugged on to the power outlets on one wall.

What does "control panel has all fuses working" mean?

Are you saying you have an old-fashioned fuse panel in your house, instead of a modern circuit breaker panel?

If so, then I would suspect a bad connection in the panel.

If you indeed have breakers, a breaker can snap into the on and positions and still be bad.

Either problem sounds like it should be handled by a qualified electrician.

The power company or your insurance company would likely reimburse you for all or part of the electrician's bill, but you shoudl call first to be sure.

It's possible to have a faulty neutral connection in your wiring. That can lead to damage of several appliances and bulbs, and even pose a real fire or smoke hazard.

Please do not hesitate to get things fixed when you have home electrical problems!
