You don't give any details or specifications of either your computer or its Audio/Sound Card/Chip. Please feel free to add a Comment or Clarification to this Question. Doing so helps us makes faster, more accurate and more assured Remote Diagnostics leading to better quality and more useful Advice, Answers, Guidelines , How-Tos and Solutions.

If by "volume", you mean Audio, then this sounds like an Audio/Sound Driver fault or corruption.

When Audio/Sound Drivers are either not installed or the Audio/Sound Card/Chip is Disabled or Uninstalled in Device Manager, the Windows Volume and Mixer Controls can become Disabled until the Drivers are installed or repaired

Reinstall the Windows XP Audio/Sound Driver for the brand, type and model number of your computer from its Driver and Utilities CD. If you have no CD, download the Drivers and Utilities from the Support & Downloads Page of the computer manufacturer's website.

Since I do not know the details of your computer. I cannot, as I would otherwise have done, provide you with a link to the specific Download Page.

I hope this helps.

No sound and no icon on my desktop

your sound card and audio drivers have been corrupted.
go to "my computer"
right click and select Properties
select Hardware, and Device Manager.
go to "sound video, game controllers"
1st try Troubleshoot, usually doesn't work,
Then try right clicking on audio and do an "Update driver"
If this doesn't work then try deleting the Audio Drivers.
restart your computer and it will reinstall them.
If that doesn't work, you will need to find out what your video card is,
then go to the company website and download their drivers and reinstall.

The last option is usually the best option, but you can try the others.

Cant get sound to work

Hello welcome to Fixya, there several reasons that can cause the sound not to work on your computer. The first thing you should do is to check the volume on your computer to make sure that the volume is up and if you keyboard has volume button make sure that the volume is up.If you done all of this and still can't hear no sound please go to the manufacturer website and download the sound drivers for your computer. You can also download the sound drivers from other websites such as:
Please remember that if you see the word audio drivers that also mean sound drivers.
Thanks for choosing Fixya

Hi! Mi laptop was working perfect, and suddenly the audio icon has an X on it and says NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED How can I recover it? Thanks

Did you download or install anything that might tamper around with the audio. If you did then uninstall it and reinstall it, that might help. Alright if that doesn't help then go into Control Panel and click on the Icon that says "Sounds and audio devices." Or something similar.

Play around with the settings and see if your situation improves. You may have to go into the "Audio tab" and set the Sound Playback and default device to what ever your sound card name is. If you dont know what your sound card name is then just play with those settings. Another thing that you could use is system restore.

System restore is in (Start, All programs,Accessories,System tools,System Restore). Restore it to the date that your audio was working fine. System restore wont delete your files or anything.

I have windows xp so things might be different on your computer.

Please rate me a thumbs up if I helped.

No sound device

? mark means no sound driver install or errors in Device Manager. u can check ur mother board cd room or can search ur audio driver in web or below may be ur answer

Question: Where do I locate motherboard sound drivers?
Answer: Users who have motherboards with on-board audio (often with VIA, Realtek, or C-Media chipsets) may have issues with their audio or AC'97 errors in Device Manager. Often this is caused because the operating system has been reinstalled and the motherboard chipset drivers are not installed. To resolve this issue try following the below steps.
Let Windows redetect drivers
If you have not recently reinstalled Microsoft Windows it's possible that your audio drivers are simply corrupt. Open Device Manager and remove all devices under "Sound, video and game controllers" and any "Other devices". Once removed reboot the computer and let Microsoft Windows re-detect the audio drivers.
Motherboard chipset drivers
Reinstalling the motherboard chipset drivers will usually resolve this issue. If your computer came with a Motherboard CD, install the chipset drivers from the CD and the sound drivers if also available on the CD.
If you do not have a motherboard CD, obtain the motherboard chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer.
Sound card drivers
If after installing the motherboard chipset drivers you continue to have issues install the sound drivers. We suggest you download the sound drivers from the computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer.
A listing of motherboard manufacturers and their drivers can be found on our motherboard chipset drivers page.
