Saw attachment will work but weed trimmer attachment will not turn

check that the trimmer attachment is fitted properly on the shaft as it appears the the shaft drive is not engaging in the head

At times the head willnot turn so i turn it upright and tap it on the ground..this seems to reconnect something and it will spin for awhile..is there a set screw or something that holds that shaft?

Check the clutch assembly

My poulan pro trimmer has no nut on the head to remove it. it has a screw inside. how do i work that. the screwdriver wont hold it.

See page 13 of your manual here for removing the head. Please realize that the head has LEFT_HANDED threads on it (not the conventional R-handed) so you have to turn it to the RIGHT to loosen and remove it.

Sure you can...that would be called the crankshaft assembly. You can find it here...along with any other parts you may wish/need. These low-end trimmers are practically considered disposable household items nowadays and a lot of people treat them as such. Look for the crankshaft assembly here:

You can wrap a rag around the threaded end of the string head shaft after removing the bump knob to hold in place while turning the upper part of the string head counterclockwise to remove. Then you can do the same to remove the metal shaft adapter nut above that, exposing the flex shaft in its entirety.

How do I get the head off of the trimmer?

There should be a round knob at the bottom of the spool where the string is. Twist off counter clockwise and the spool of string will drop off.

Try putting a wrench on the nut that is above the head to hold it steady. Then try turning the head off being aware that the stud the head spins on to has left handed thread on it.

Just below the gearbox there is a slot and when you turn the shaft there is a slot on the shaft that lines up with that one. Stick a screwdriver in the slot when they are lined up and then grab the head and turn it clockwise. (the threads are reversed)
