Question about Ruud UBHC Air Conditioner

Ruud ac 16 seer cooling fan not working

We have had this problem before. last summer the fan failed when switched on after the winterfor the first time.

They came and 'fixed' this saying it was a loose wire.

Now the same thing has happened again. switched the cooling on after the winter and the fan does nothing.

Cannot get any help from Ruud (no email contact and they have not called me after I left a voice message).

Supposed to be covered by 5 years Parts & Labor but the installer has gone out of business it seems.

Anyone else had this problem and a solution?

Regards, Liam

There is probably no loose wire in my case.

Yes, I was talking about the outside fan. However that works fine.

I had an ac guy look at it and he thinks its the contactor. It does not close when the thermostat sends the cooling signal.

The fan works as he started it by closing the contactor manually.

He did not know enough about Ruud ac (its a 16 seer two stage type system) so he arranged for another person familiar with these Ruud systems to come on Monday next.

I'm hoping its just the contactor but who knows?

Why would it work till the end of summer but not work the following summer? The same thing happened lasy year.

Ruud have been completely unhelpful. I will never touch their equipment again.

    Thanks for your help.

"These 16 SEER units have a small circuit board on them more then likely it is bad".

Do you mean the Diagnostic board mounted on the side of the main control part?

When this problem happened last year the so called installer / repair guy was fiddling with that diagnostic part - claimed there was a loose wire in there.

Also how much are these parts?

I'm supposed to be covered by warranty.

The problem was that there was almost no coolant in the pipe. There must be a small leak somewhere. The low pressure switch prevented the fan etc from starting.

This is probably an installation problem but maybe a damaged condenser.

Thanks for telling me what was up on your unit. You are right in your following statement.

"this is probably an installation problem but maybe a damaged condenser." Damaged the compressor of the condenser. I mean might have shorten the life. So I would really push for a new condenser.

I am talking about the condenser outside part they have a small board on them. Broads cost 50 to 75 ..

I think the guy you are dealing with was on the inside board. They can run 200 bucks. Good thing you have a warranty

These 16 SEER units have a small circuit board on them more then likely it is bad. having depressed the contactor by hand proved that everything is good so you will need a new board. I just ran into that today I jumped around the board and working perfectly. Going to get a new part monday and will be good to go. But this weekend she has a A/C for our sticky weather we are having here in Kansas.

Being loose wire you might have used up the fan motor and need a new one. You are talking about the fan outside right?

Go to rudds website and there should be a place where you can find a factory authorized dealer in your area.

I had Ruud heating and cooling installed five years ago. Last summer my electric bill doubled when I began running my air conditioner. It did not do that the first few years that we were in this house. ...

Hello In a way you are stuck with what is called a S.E.E.R. rating which is a statement of efficiency from the manufacturer.Ex: a 10seer is less electricity to run than a 14 seer. The model # would have told me the seer rating.A 4 ton `1 zone is a large unit but even a 10 seer 4 ton is never cost prohibitive to operate and Never doubles the electric bill in 5 days out of thirty. Is the home unoccupied all month and you use it on weekends?Did the neighbor run a strange wire to your property? There might be stray or lost voltage in rare cases if there is poor grounding issues.Has the unit been serviced? A low freon charge will cause a unit to run excessively long and not cool.Do you run the indoor blower all the time.Has there been any other major purchases made (at all) that you plug in?I would look at everything because there is some cause for DOUBLE bill amount not just the cooling bill.Good luck

Where is the reset button on a ruud 10 seer located?

There is no reset button on that unit...if it is not working it is because the contactor has failed, the t-stat is not calling for cooling, or the compressor is bad...

My low side is 90psig and high side 250 psig what is going on

If it is very hot in the house the suction will be high but not that high. If you have a 13 seer inside and a 10 seer outside your suction can be that high if you don't lower fan speed. Does your unit coll ok. Another reason if it is not cooling well is bad valve in compressor but the compressor would going out on internal overload because of getting to hot. If you have TXV metering device it could be stuck open. Check sub cooling. Put a thermometer on the 3/8 line and measure the difference between that temp and the guage temp. Look at your pressure and the temp reading is nest to the pressure. The difference should be between 12 and 16 degrees. Measure Large line temp for superheat difference should be between. 12 and 16 degrees. Feed back please

Residential HVAC - Repair vs Replace? Heat Pump? Two Stage AC?

for 65 dollars i would replace the coil I do however love gas and heat pump combos it will cut your gas bill by about 75% only uses gas below 30 deg
you may want to try a honeywell 8000 stat it has random circulation fan comes on and just circulates the air also used for gas hp combo with an out door sensor and you don't need the fossil heat kit as for the copper if possible replace it due to don't trust any ones soldering as for units the are all about the same look for warranty some replace unit others have life time comp if only going to be in house for 10 yrs hard to recover cost give replacement allowance when sell

Ruud achiever 10 seer air conditioner

It sounds like your condenser fan motor may be locked up or the capacitor that helps give the condenser fan motor a kick to get it started may be defective. Try turning your system on and using a long screwdriver try to push the fan blade on the condenser fan motor to see if it will run normally if you give it the starting boost it needs. If it does run at full speed and doesn't over heat or start and then slow down then you probably only need to replace a simple 10-12$ capacitor. If it barely turns, makes an odd humming sound or overheats etc. then you will have to replace the condenser fan motor. This is assuming that the outdoor condenser has the 220v supplied and the 24v supplied to the compressor relay, that the compressor relay is engaged and suppling 220v to the condenser fan motor.
