There is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In rare cases it is a problem with the GPU.

E74: AV cable error? There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (this could also be a problem with the internal AV encoder chip)

A way to fix it is to overheat your consol, get loads of towels or somit, and cover all sides of the consol and leave it to overheat, turn it off when ti doesn and it will work. 100% proven.

E74 for XBOX 360 is a hardware failure. Unplug all controllers, hard drives, memory card(s). Unplug and reseat the power cable and the A/V cable. Check the power supply to see that color led lights up when you turn the console on. If it is red or orange it is an issue with the power supply (either overheating or too much/too little power. If you are plugging the power supply into a cheap surge protector plug it directly into the wall. If none of these suggestions work then you need to contact Microsoft.

e74 error came up along with the system error screen in multiple languages. Tried the cable unplug solution to no effect. Have an e-mail in to xbox now.

My xbox elite has one red light and gives the code e74. I called xbox technical support and they had me do some troubleshooting. Seems that my 360 will or cannot read any hard drives. Even when I remove a hard drive it will not go to a green light.

i have the same problem about the coloured dashes while playin games and dvds and thenit just went , ploop and it didnt work no more

Comment by pjajmom, posted on Nov 12, 2007

My system was working yesterday but I was getting these vertical black dotty lines while trying to play and green vertical lines when it was going from one game screen to the next. But when it was on the menu screens it acted totally fine. Now today I have one flashing light with error code E74. Of course they say my warrenty is expired and I have to pay $99. But if you do that they only give you one month warrenty after that. Crazy!
Help!
