Question about Viking Professional Series VCBB36 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Viking Pro VCBB36 -warming up + alarm

After twice hitting the max button on both freezer and fridge in the span of 15 hours, the fridge is at 45F, and the in the freezer ice is not solid -slushhy.

Genesis: the heat alarm came on . It has done this before, and I have just silenced it. Sometimes, good for an hour, some times for months.

This time, it came on twice in 30 minutes, so I kept my finger on the alarm off button longer. I got three beeps. It really warmed up, and I checked the manual and realized I had put it in demo mode. Fridge temp 63F

I could not undo the demo mode, so I unplugged, waited 2 minutes, and plugged back in.

Next: hit max buttons for both fridge and freezer. After 12 hours, fridge temp is 45F, still a few degrees warmer than it should be at the lowest setting. Freezer still slushy a bit.

Background: we moved the fridge once in the last 6 months. It was tilted about 20 degrees at the top for about 2-3 minutes. Then reinstalled professionally. It just has never been as cold as it was before the move. It used to freeze the food in the fridge if the setting was set at maximum.

Any help will be appreciated as in my neck of the woods, a visit is $1o0, and minimum charges north of $250

    I fixed it myself. Almost. After reading at length about tricks to get this fridge to cool, it was clear I had to call a repair specialist.

    It took the repairman 5 minutes to figure it out. He said he is 95% sure it is the condenser fan motor that is blown, and if not then it is the circuit board. Cost: $600 installed, or $750 if it is the circuit.

    As this company was the only one available for the next three days and ours is a family with kids and high fridge use, I told him to begin.

    What the repair guy did:

    * open the vent on the top, and removed all the electronics, including the buttons which appear in the inside of the fridge
    * remove other hardware behind the vent
    * remove the condenser assembly
    * put the condenser assembly on the ground (it was very hot) and removed the motor behind the fan
    * install a new motor
    * connect everything and put it all back together
    * charge $600

    It took him 1:45.

    The fridge noise is slightly deeper. I guess this fan has been broken for some time (bought home with appliance it in last year). The cooling pump has had to work extra hard to keep the fridge cool with the benefit of a blowing fan.

    NO MORE ALARMS.

    Temperature reads 39F with two more levels to go to lowest temperature setting.

    Ice maker began working again, and everything is rock hard solid in the freezer.

    Before the fridge seemed to be running 23/24 hours a day, now there are periods of quiet.

    OTHER
    Having read so many bad things about these refrigerators I asked the guy if this problem was common. And his response was these break with no less frequency than other makers. It is just that people who pay more have a lower tolerance for mechanical breakdowns, and you are hearing the complaints.

    VIKING SUPPORT
    Non-existent. Clueless service staff answer the phone. They look up from the same database of service companies their web page has, and in my case many did not serve my neighborhood.

    ADVICE
    open the vent on the top, and look to see if the big fan is turning. If not, that may be your problem.

    Last, one of the kinder technicians who was not available for another five days told me over the phone to check the vent behind the drawers in the bottom of the fridge and see if it had iced up, or if I could see shiny metal. He said, at times when these frost up, you lose power. That was not the case with mine.

    Good luck everyone.

Over the past several years my heat alarm would come on, first time I called a PROFESSIONALLY, he told me to unplug for 24HOURS, than start it. The solution worked for two years, just happened again, unplugged it for 24 hours, and it seems fine. My guess it must need to defrost. Good luck!

Both freezer and main sections appear to be operating (lights are on) but do not appear to be generating cold -- in freezer ice and food have melted. Thoughts on troubleshooting?

Unplug your fridge for 1 hour and then plug it back in. This may reset your timer to work again. Also while unplugged bang on the inside walls to free up a possible stuck timer switch. Goodluck Google burdfrenzy

The freezer has a layer of ice. how do i defrost this to clear it out?

Hi!!

Turn unit off, use a heat gun or hair dryer (to speed up process), make sure air duct going to the fridge is free of ice too.

All fridges have a defrost timer to prevent this from happening, even thou it happens. Check temp. settings, freezer temp. should be about 1/3 of range and fridge setting should be about half. wait 24hrs between adjustments until you get it right.

Hey mike this is mike... look for at homedepot or a hardware store a soft brishel long (at least 3 feet) brush so you can get in there. never use a wire brush and never never never take off the condenser
or if you have a air compressor blow it out (its going to get reallly dusty in the house open all doors)

Both Lights flashing and fridge not getting cold

I turned the fridge and freezer off using the circular dials, I then turned the unit off at the mains. Left it for a few minutes and then turned the power back on. I then turned the circular dials to "max" and then depressed the super cool and super freeze buttons to turn this facility on. This time they came on normally (not flashing) and no alarm sounded. The fridge and freezer then started to get cold. Once the unit had been running for several hours I then turned the dials to the 3/4 mark and depressed the super cool and super freeze buttons again to turn them off. Over night the fridge and the freezer appear to be working properly so I hope that my problem is solved. Maybe the unit just needed to "settle" before being switched on?

Viking freezer and fridge won't get cold enough.

I had the same problem with my side by side. Make sure the vents are not covered inside both the fridge and freezer between the bottom and top so the cold air is able to circulate between them. My freezer had ice covering the bottom vent.

Viking VCBB363RSS Fridge Orange High Temp light on

I am not sure if I have the same model, but the VIKING fridge that I purchased in Chicago is a stainless steel bottom freezer design that is horrible. I paid alot for it and it looks great on the outside - like a pretty girl that has nothing to say.....The alarm goes off constantly and tonight the freezer wasn't working! This thing is not even 5 years old and my GE fridge in the basement that I use to store drinks for the pool and things that I don't want to spoil is probably 40 years old (I got it from my parents and has NEVER been a problem). What is up VIKING? Where are your engineers??
