The refrigerator ran just fine with the control tube where it was.  It was only AFTER it started freezing the food that I replaced the theromstat unit.  Do you think the fan not running could be part of the problem?

There is also a defrost thermostat.  Could it be the culprit or are you pretty sure it's the defrost timer (it has a knob on it)?

There is a part called the defrost timer that can cause this problem, it is the most common cause of this by far, replace it.

If you have replaced the temp. control with a new exact replacement and you have also tried turning the setting down 1 adjustment per 24 hours until reaching its lowest setting then the only possible cause of this problem is the location or placement of the very end of the temp. control tube. It normally will run into the area the cold air is supplied from and it has to have the rubber like cover over it that was on the old temp. control. The tip of this small tube is the actual sensor and should not be exposed. You should be able to reach the correct temp. by adjusting the location of this sensor.
Let me know if you have any other questions and how it works out.

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.

First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

Normally when the refrigerator side freezes, it's because of an air flow problem. It can be caused from a stuck or defective air diffuser, a control board or sensor if this model has them or a thermostat, if it has one. You can check the temperature in the freezer section, to see if it's getting too cold (below zero). To check the temperature, place a thermometer between some packages. Air temperature is not a good check. If it is too cold, it can also cause the fridge section to get too cold. Usually, adjusting the control, to a slighlty warmer setting, will correct this.

The compressor is cycled on/off by the fresh food temperature setting. The freezer setting controls a panel, or door if you will, that allows cold air to be blown into the freezer.

Since both compartments are getting too cold, the most likely culprit is the fresh food thermostat control, since it controls the compressor cycle. Try setting it to a higher setting, even if it's above normal. Use a manual thermometer to check the temperature of the fresh food compartment and compare it to the control setting. The readings should be the same or very nearly the same.

I assume your refrigerator is controlled by a solid state controller (i.e. a printed circuit board). Some of these allow for calibration of the thermostat to coincide with the actual temperature of the fresh food compartment. That would most likely have to be done by a service technician unless you have expertise in the field.

If calibration is not an option, if you can live with the thermostat setting not reflecting the actual temperature, a free fix is to simply set it higher than you actually want it to be, recognizing that the actual temperature is 'X' degrees lower than the thermostat setting.

The freezer compartment temperature will be similarly affected, and can be controlled by the freezer temp setting, which is actually nothing more than setting the position of the panel which allows or restricts air from being blown into the fresh food compartment from the freezer. Again, the compressor is cycled on and off by the thermostat in the FRESH FOOD compartment which gets its cold air from the freezer compartment.

usually there is an adjustment at the back for the difference between the fridge and freezer compartment. Often is just a vane that blocks freezer air, too much air would freeze the food. Normally you set the fridge thermostat for a normal food temp, then adjust the air to keep the food warmer than the freezer.
