Bought a ibm r40 at a auction but has no operating system

Get into setup(probably F2 at start up) and check what hard drive it has, if any. Then, does it have a floppy drive,or a CD drive? Also, if it has a hard drive, it is possible to connect to another computer and format, and install windows. Good luck.

My display gets distorted

There is a simple test to narrow the possibilities. Connect your Thinkpad to a known working monitor using the video out connections at the back base of the computer. Then power on your R40 and see if the distorted screen develops on the known working monitor. If it does then you very likely have the BGA video problem, or Ball Grid Assembly problem and the problem is caused by a video/graphics chip on the motherboard. If you known working screen paired with your R40's base works fine, then you know it is a problem related to the screen itself and will call for either a new inverter or new backlight or new screen depending on further tests. But my bet is that it is the BGA problem which you can learn more about by searching for those terms on the net. There are services that repair ("reball") these BGAs but you have to remove the motherboard from the computer, or pay the service to do so. You can download the HMM, Harware Maintenance Manual, from IBM/Lenovo's site to get an idea of what is involved in opening up your R40 to extract the motherboard. This should help you narrow things down.

I had to restart my IBM Laptop by shutting down the power manually.now it will not re-start windows even in Safe mode.im getting a ECC Error sectors 53072284 - 53072411 Hard Disk Drive any help would be...

Sounds like a corrupted or damaged hard drive, if u can get to dos instead of safe mode try running one of these to commands to do a hard drive sector check and repair:
chkntfs - dos hard drive check
scandisk - windows hard drive check

Even if these fix the hard drive problem depending on what sector was damaged u may still need to reinstall windows though

IBM R40

Hi,

The error indicates that the hard disk requires replacement. To my understanding, a 40GB Hard Drive was originally installed which you can replace with a larger capacity. Any brand/model actually would do as long the physical dimensions and fittings/connectors are identical.

Replacing the hard drive of course would mean that you have to reinstall your OS and all of your applications. This would be easy if the laptop originally came with recovery CDs. Should they not be available, any OEM installer of your original OS would serve the purpose. Drivers and appropriate software/utilities are downloadable here.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

R40 Thinkpad CD drive

Sounds like more of a software problem, I've had my dvd drive only show up as a cd drive but i think that was only in windows 98? Many problems will start showing up when your disk is very full. Try deleting some old files until you have 25% free space (only 75% full) or 20% free (80 full) at the minimum, then defragment. I recommend using a 3rd party program such as Diskeeper, since windows defrag Isn't very good.
If you can not free up enough space because all of your things are too important to delete, think about buying an external hard drive to back up too, or simply look for a bigger hard drive of the laptop and copy the old hard drives contents to the new one using something like norton ghost.
Most likely you would need a laptop hdd to desktop hdd converter, which is like $5 or less, so you can copy the contents since laptops can only have one hard drive (usually). If you can't do this or don't want to try it, bring your laptop to a pc repair shop and they will transfer your data to a bigger hdd for you for a nominal fee.
Remember, I do not guarantee this to fix your dvd problem, but it is a good idea to do it anyways to increase performance and reliability.

Seagate momentus 3 60gb problem

What software did you use for the cloning?
Ghost is the preferred method.
Be sure to choose a disk to disk clone, not a partition clone.
It sounds like you may have created a 20G partition and left 40G unallocated.
Partition Magic may also take care of the problem, if you have access to a copy.
