Hello...
I have a problem with my television, any advice would be greatly
appreciated.
My GE TV M# 25gt516, only about 3 years old, recently died. No sound,
no picture...just a tiny blue dot in the middle of the screen. Took
apart and found a bad resistor, burned out. Replaced resistor with
exact replacement, but tv still did not work.
Took to repair shop, they found bad power supply, wanted over $150 to
replace power supply.
Now, can I find the power supply myself and replace it myself??? Or
should I attempt to rebuild the power supply??? Or should I just scrap
the TV and buy a new one? Since its only 3 years old, I feel like I
should've gotten more than 3 years out of it.
Thanks

separate unit). What is the chassis number? What is the location
number of the burned out resistor? If it is the PS, the regulator IC
and possibly some other components may be bad, and this sort of damage
may be the result of a power surge.

supply, it is not excessively high.
It is not one of the best designs for taking any kind of power line
fluctuation, and when it goes, there are a large number of parts that need
replaced.
Yes, it was a very cheap tv set when new, around $200. This is one reason
that the design was such that any one power supply part fails, it takes all
of them out. Making for a more expensive repair, versus the cost of the tv
set.
Depending on the exact ctc185 chassis version and date of manufacture, about
3 years ago they had a poor QC run on flybacks they were buying from Daewoo,
which would short the H.O.T. and take out the power supply, including that
resistor r14114, full location number for looking up the part number.
Typically this was a full $150 repair bill.

Thanks for replying.
The resistor in question is R114U, a 200 ohm 2 watt resistor.
The chassis # (I think) is CTC185...there are also markings on the
circuit board that are 2 Q68023-0IL
There is a regulator at Q4114F, according to the paperwork on the
inside of the tv cover, it says Reg B+ Regulator.
