Question about Frigidaire FRT21H8 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Refrigeration i have an upright single door freezor, hobart make, with R502. Not freezing. unit is at 25 degrees. Evap. coil is icing on bottom, very little.. condensor coil clean, and condensor and evap fans running. put unit into defrost and took unit out. seemed to get to 25 degrees......i need some mediate assistance....i noticed on my high side port there was no cap covering it, and on the low side port it seemed as if at one time it was leaking and they put leak lock on it....im thinking low charge? my low side pressure was at -35 psi for R502, and my high side was at 90 psi for R502...i need some suggestions... please help.....

what relay on the compressor are you talking about? the t-stat is turned al the way down to 9.

  • bobbycagna Apr 22, 2009

yes, the compressor turns on and runs. with the stat turned down. i turned the defrost timer and had it cut the unit off, and turned it back so the unit came back on.

  • bobbycagna Apr 22, 2009

    thats what i suspected. thanks!

Your pressure sound pretty good. I would check the thermostat and the relay on the compressor. If you are getting no frost on your coil, that is usually a tall-tall sign of a bad compressor then it would be better to just replace the unit.

There should be a black blox on the side of the compressor if it is not there. Then the compressor has a built in relay. With the T-stat turned down the compressor comes on?

Oh sorry, I was not paying attention, you need to add freon. You should never be getting suction like you are. If your pressure is at -35 then you are in suction and need to get freon into that unit ASAP.

Yes, sorry for that, I was thinking you where 35 not -35

Does not get cold enough

If refrigerant charge is ok, make sure that the evaporator coil is not covered with ice. The latter serves as an insulator and will keep unit from achieving designed low temps. Remove ice by defrosting unit manually and then restarting unit. If ice continues to build up at alarming rate check for the tightness of door gaskets. If lots of moisture gets into unit, it will collect and freeze on coil. Also check to see that the defrost timer is not going on excessively. Those defrost cycles can raise internal temps by as much as 25 degrees; if the cycles come on prematurely and/or very often internal temps will be high.

Ge profile 2004 open door and temp controls off shut door open they come back on light was staying on sometimes to bottom half of coils in freezor froze freezer working but temp in frig 50s on off fri

It is possible the refrigerator is low on Freon. You will need to remove the back panel inside the rear of freezer to examine the evaporator coils. If only a few rows have frost it will be time to replace the refrigerator. If the control panel in the freezer dispenser are coming on and off there may be a bad connection in the plug under the top left door hinge cover. Check that the plug is tight. Let me know what you see first behind the freezer wall, Thanks Sea Breeze

you said a mouth full . any of the 3 would cause freeze up.. so make sure the inside fan (evap fan is working ) . if unit is newer one the control in side fresh food may be bad and the sensor in the freezer. if it does not sense tempt properly the compressor run time is too long causing freeze up . now some times new components fail so ck them . . clean the bottom coils . and make sure the bottom fan is cooling the coils .. mm

Veggies frozen, Ice thawed, water slow or intermittently dispens.

with out testing and or doing a full diagnostics on your unit their can be a few reasons --one is control unit ---others are slightly low on freon ---dirty condenser coil---evap frozen over with limited air flow --evap fan improper speed or frozen--damper frozen or limiting air flow or door stuck

Unit keep on going out on lock out

Wash out outside coil with hose with 30 degree downward starting at the top and work side to side to bottom and try again. If this don't help check evap coil (inside) for ice forming when unit is on. You should see a 15 - 25 degree drop from room temp coming out of discharge air. This will change with humidity indoors. as it drops temp will too.If outside coil is dirty or unit is low on gar it will cause high compressor and high disgharge lockout. Low gas can also cause freezing of indoor coil and loe temp or pressure lock out depending on type of protection incorporated.

I have an older commercial upright Hobart freezer. The freezer seems to operate fine, cycling but always returning the compartment to zero degrees, until all of a sudden the temperature went up, well...

In most cases, an evap that freezes up is either an air flow problem or no defrost cycle. Older Hobarts have mechanical defrost time clocks. It could be locked up i.e., not running so no defrost cycle.
It could be coming out of defrost too early because the sensor that monitors the evap temp is not working properly.
The door could not be closing. If left cracked open, it will freeze up every time as unit never hits temp., keeps unit running. Warm air is seeping in and the moisture freezes on evap.
Lastly, the defrost heater(s) may not be working. Burned out, shorted, broken wire, etc.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Freezer stuck on -20 degrees

well it depends on how long the door was open for during the cleaning, your evap coil was unable to cool the unit due to the warm air coming in, that will cause the evap coil to over frez . un-plugging the unit may work but the best thing to do is force it into a defrost you can do that by pressing and holding the ice key on the key pad for 10 sec or till you hear the freezer shut down this will thaw the ice on the coil and the unit with come back on within 20 to 30 Min's

GE 25 side by side refrigerator ice maker problem

Assuming the temp inside the freezer is at around 0 or -2 degrees, it should dump ice every ~50 minutes or so. Again, depending on temp's, an Ice Bin should fill within 24 to 48 hours. If your freezer temp is running at around 10 degrees, everything will obviously still be frozen (below 32), but the ice maker will take longer to freeze the water than it would if it were at 0 degrees. Open both doors and place the palm of your hand on the partition between the freezer and Fresh Food compartments... (where the door gaskets seat when they're closed). The temp of the partition should be about 5 or 10 degrees warmer than body temp., If it's hotter than that, you found the problem. Either the condenser coils are dirty and need a good cleaning OR your condenser fan motor (the fan in back, near the floor in the compressor area) is failed or about to fail.
