more than likely it damaged the inner gears or drive pins that make the blades reciprocate and need replaced. if you would like instructions to repair it yourself i will send you them or you can take it to a service center.

cut the bad part out,then strip the outer insulation off carefully as not to knick the inner insulation,then strip off all wire ends appx 3/4" to 1" and twist the black wire to the other black wire and tape securely so no bare wires are showing,then do the same with the white/white wires and then green/green ground wires and finally tape the whole thing to keep out moisture with electrical tape from most hardware/d.i.y. stores

The likely issue is the gear pin has been sheared. The part is no longer available from Craftsman. (P/N from sears: 616255-001)
I had a similar issue with a similar electric trimmer. I removed the old pin and used a split pin and ground it down to the proper size. It's now worked for about 2 years just fine. This requires complete dis-assembly.
