Unless you see leakage from the transmission seals there is normally no need to check the fluid level. It more likely a worn drive belt and v-belt idler and I would recommend you check these first as checking the fluid level in transmission will probably require pulling the transmission.
This idler was made of plastic and wears heavily. Once it wears down to where the drive belt bottoms out it creates belt slippage.
Your drive belt is 1/2 x 84-3/4 PN 532140218 and V-idler PN 532194326
Assuming any belt changes were correct..check the path of the belt to make sure it's not pinched in the guides..and with the blades disengaged and the engine off..that one of your blade hubs isn't seized up. On my exact model the blade pulley brake was originally installed wrong and engageing the blades did not release the pulley brake pad and it fully dragged on the pulley. Once I corrected this I confirmed its normal to slow the engine slightly during normal engagement but not stall at medium rpm.
Mine did same thing, need to manually adjust choke. If you raise hood and adjust your throttle you will see that when you press up to choke that it actually hits & pushed in choke. But when you back off if it is like mine the choke doesn't come off, so I manually pulled choke to off & mine started right up. I am still trying to find how or where cable came off for the choke to be adjusted by throttle lever. That is why I was on here looking for photo of engine.
