Hi guys,

I see a couple people are having the same problem. This is a problem we see often in Canada due to the bi-lingual nature of the country.

Depending on where in the world you are located these instructions will vary slightly, but you can figure out which country you live in and what language options you see available on your keyboard.

Sandy has given some good general advice, thank you Sandy. However, my living in a region with this issue I think I can top Sandy's solution off with a bit more advice. The problem is if you live in an area with one or more dialects of the same language(Arabic, Chinese and English being of note) there are several correct options to pick for your keyboard. I will use canadian computers as an example.

Quite often when customers buy a PC from me they go home and upon turning them on answer the location questions as Location: Canada, Language English(Canada), Keyboard: English(Canadian Multi Lingual, Canadian French or Canadian English) not realizing there is no Canadian Keyboard design for strictly English, they all have some variant of French Accents embedded. The proper answer to the last question(unless it actually is a multi ligual or french keyboard) is US English as that is the keyboard 90% of Canadians use.

Both of you seem to have the same problem, wrong keyboard setting.

To change the setting, go into the Start Menu, Open Control Panel(may be inside settings menu in XP), then switch to Classic Mode using the link in the top left corner if you don't have more than 12 icons present.

Once you have the full list showing, click on Regional Settings or Regoinal and Language Options.

When this window opens, Select the Languages Tab(XP) or Keyboards & Input Devices tab(Vista).

There will be a button (Details in XP) that allows you to see the installed Keyboards. Once the Keyboards window opens, Ensure your Keyboard(US, UK, CAD) is installed, if it's not on the list, click Add and find it on the list, then click OK.

Once you are sure your keyboard is installed, remove all other Keyboards by selecting them then clicking Remove.

When the proper keyboard is the only one left, Click Ok on that window and on the Regional menu.

This should resolve your issues unless of course you accidentally select the Farsi Keyboard in which case you can redo the above steps to resolve the problem.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

I have just bought a MX5500 keyboard and mouse. As a UK citizen I need to be able to type a pound sign and a euro sign but this is a US keyboard. Can you help

Unfortunately, a US keyboard is set up to send out keycodes for the US symbols. If you're using Windows 7, this information from Microsoft may be helpful. For XP, you can try changing your regional settings in the Control Panel (Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options). You can try changing the keyboard layout and see what happens.

One sure way to get the symbols from any keyboard is by using alt codes. Hold down the ALT key and (on the numeric pad) press 0128 for the Euro symbol (€). ALT-0163 gives you the Pound Sterling symbol (£).

How can I write a pound sign by using a dell keyboard

The easiest way is to hold down the Alt key and type "156", then release the Alt key. You will see a British pound (£) sign appear. However, sometimes "pound" means the number sign (#), but that's mostly used in voicemail prompts.
If you use the first pound symbol a lot, you can either keep it on the clipboard, or consider remapping a key you never use (like the tilde, or ~) to type that character (see http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-022).

Hope this helps!

I cannot get the qwerty keyboard on my HTC desire HD to display a pound steling sign, it only seems to have a dollar sign

Hi,

The Pound Sterling sign is available. Please follow these steps:
  1. On the keyboard hit the ?123 keyboard to bring out the numbers and symbols layout.
  2. Now, hit ALT to show the alternate symbols layout. The Pound Sterling symbol is available in place of # in this layout.
Hope this helps. If so, please consider rating this solution.

The pound sign on my Dell keyboard does not work. It types the # sign??

In the United States # is the pound sign (shift-3), in the UK the term "pound sign" is understood to mean the currency symbol, £, for pound sterling

The pound symbol

I am unable to answer your problem that why you are not getting the required symbol if it is there (Hope that you are pressing the no. 3 with Shift key pressed).
But if you need a Pound sign you can get it by pressing 0163 key from the right side numeric keypad while pressing the alt key (i.e. alt+0163).
Remember that you cannot use the upper number key for this purpose.
