Won't recognise DVD disk.

Hi, I have a Samsung HR 735 HDD DVD. It worked OK at first. Now it won't accept, to play or record, any DVD disk (blank or pre-recorded). It will still play music CD's OK. Any ideas?

Hi Marketex, thanks, your comments make sense. How do I back up before deleting files?

  • gregsears Apr 22, 2009

    Hi Marketex,

Thanks very much. I have a laptop and an external HDD with USB port connection. Can't see from instructions how to connect/copy to either. I'm not too technical, sorry!

Hi Marketex, once again, thank you for all your help! I'll get it sorted.

Your system needs a portion of the HDD to swap and stream for the purpose of playing and recording DVDs while CDs are small enough in their data size to play without the minimal size of the space left on your HDD which should be backed up and then erased to give you that brand new feeling.

Try it and get back to me with any problems.

Thanks for asking.

IF you have a manual please check page 96 (but especially page 105) for full instructions on backing up from HDD TO DVD.

Now, the problem is that your HDD is pretty choked with data as you can't even PLAY a DVD, so use the diagrams in our online manual to configure an output route from your coaxial, s-video, composite or other routes into any backup device, like a laptop or external Hard Drive, so you can perform such a backup.

Not knowing exactly which of the above you have available, I can only give you specific instructions when your backup device is known.

Look at the pages to which I directed you for instructions on how to copy and also on other pages which show the inputs and outputs.

You have an S-Video Output, which is one way to transfer both video and audio.

There are component red-white-yellow outputs which is another way to transfer video and audio.

Your external hard drive with a USB input should only be attached to your Laptop and the Samsung should transfer digital data to and through your laptop to your external hard drive.

Now, given the fact that you do not consider yourself to be that technical, and thank your for being honest enough to acknowledge that as some might want to bluff, I would admonish your to turn the actual transfer and care of the data over to a nerd like myself in your vicinity who will make certain of the integrity of the data.

He or she will transfer and verify the data from your Samsung before wiping your HDD in pretty much the form I have suggested above.

I have had his problem several times. The fan pulls in dust at a rate of knots. The optics are so sensitive that a speck will cause the problem. What I do when this happens is to get a can of air cleaner and blow out the dust from the optics. Now look, most of you people are savvy. However, here are a few caveats for the uninitiated.

1. Ensure you have unplugged it first before removing the cover and don't touch the power board.
2. Dont hold these air cans upside down or sideways because if you do then you will squirt sub zero degrees liquid 'whatever' onto the lens (very bad).

After unplugging, just undo the 5 screws and take off the lid. The optics section is in the very middle of the dvd transport component (there's a ribbon attached to it). Blow this out with the air can a.k.a 'air duster' (available at most electronics shops or online). Replace the lid and try a dvd that didn't work before. If it fails, redo the job.

Hope this helps,

My Samsung DVD-HR753 will not recognise any of the blank discs I am using including DVD-RW. I've tried Panasonic, Logitec, HP Lightscribe and Datawrite but no joy. I'm trying to record from the HDD to DVD....

It looks to me to be an old machine as I see listings for that model in 2006, now there could be a few reasons firstly it may need a firmware update which will enable it to "recognise discs" made later than it (service engineer).
The laser may be poor, playing is less stressful than recording or it may need a general service, their mechanisms and/or optic slides get dusty sticking to old lubricant slowing response times so the machine goes into "timeout" or just gives up, some have rubber belts which stretch.
It comes down to cost of repair versus new one? you could try a lens cleaner disc (a disc with a bit of fuzz stuck on it) but I have found these have varied sucess and a service clean is better with a suitable liquid.

Hope this helps.........

LG RH265 - Problem when trying to register blank disk/dubbing

The DVD needs to initialise the disk first. Come out of the HDD dubbing menu and press DVD on the remote. The blank recordable disk should be recognised and you should see Initialise disk? on the screen. Press Start and hey presto, you can now dub from the HDD Movie dubbing menu (as per the manual instructions).

Recording problem with LG RH266 Recorder..

Just bought unit. Had same problem.Tried lots of different types of disks with no luck. Tried to play already written +R disk. Worked OK. Then took out and replaced with blank -R. Came up with new screen asking me if I wanted to initialize disk. Answered yes and it took about 20 seconds. Then tried to DUB from HDD to DVD again. This time it came up with the dubbing menu, I hadn't seen before, and worked.
Hardly ideal, but the trick was to get it to recognise it as a blank and initialize. Currently burning my first disk. Didnt realise about 'FAST' mode, so taking ages.

On page 45 of the user manual it says this:

Both the HDD & DVD RECORDER and the discs are coded
by region. These regional codes must match in order for the
disc to play. If the codes do not match, the disc will not play.
The Region Number for this HDD & DVD RECORDER is
described on the rear panel of the HDD & DVD RECORDER

If you changed the region codes on your player it will not work. They should be set back to 1 or whatever your model says on the back of the unit.

If this unit was purchased outside the United States, it may not work in the United States.
