Most laptops have a built-in modem and LAN card and have modem and LAN connectors on the side or rear of the laptop.
If you cannot detect or see your modem then the problem could be :-
Make sure you connect the phone cable into the phone connector (the narrower one) and not in the LAN connector on the laptop.
The problem could be :-
The modem driver was not installed or disabled.
1st - check to see if the modem was not disabled in the BIOS.
2nd - Go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - and check to see if there is a yellow ? against the modem device. If there is a ? then the modem driver was not installed.
Then install the modem driver.
If there isn't a ? against the modem make sure the modem is enabled.
If you still cannot resolve the problem, list what steps you have taken and any error messages and get back to me.

Since you successfully have connected the Vista system to the router, it is the router that is blocking access. Has the router been configured to allow only a short list of unique MAC-addresses to be able to access the Internet?

If you use a cable to DIRECTLY connect the Vista system to the cable-modem (or DSL-modem), and then power-off/power-on that modem, and then restart the Vista system, do you get Internet access?

Whenever I connect the router it says no internet access....

If you have a wireless router and it is connected to the DSLor cable modem then - To connect to your wireless router, the router needsits wireless settings to be configured with the SSID, encryption key etc., alsothe wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicatewith your wireless router and access the Internet via the DSL or cable modem.

OUR YOU TRY TO CONNECT BOTH LABTOPS TOGETHER TO TRANSFER THE INFORMATION.

THE CABLE MODEM HAS AWAY TO CONNECT TO THE NEW PC.

YOU NEED TO CONTACT YOUR INTERNET PROVIDER AND EXPLAIN YOU HAVE OLD CABLE MODEM AND YOU WANT TO UPGRADE TO THE NEW EQUIPMENT SETUP BUNDLE, THEY WILL SEND YOU A BOOK, CDROM OR DVD, THAT WILL TALK YOU THREW THE NEW PROCIDURES OF HOOKING UP THE NEW SYSTEM.

THE NEW AND OLD SYSTEMS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE IN ANY SINCE BECUASE THE WINDOWS VERSIONS, UPGRADES, SERVICE PACKS, WHAT THE SPEED IS, AND IF YOU HAVE 16BIT, OR 32BIT OR 64BIT SYSTEM, THERE ARE SOME 8BIT SYSTEMS BUT I HAVENT SEEN ONE IN A LONG TIME.

DNS error when connecting PS3 to internet

you could try getting a wifi adapter and creating an access point, you can connect that way if your ps3 has wifi I have a laptop with windows XP Pro and have been trying that my desktop PC with Vista Home can see it.
MY Components:
-Desktop PC with Vista Home (Main PC, connected to Internet with Ethernet to a Linksys Wireless Router B and G).
-Get internet thru cable TV (broadband),from this cable modem plugs to router and from router to PC Vista(desktop)
-Linksys Wireless G/B Router
-G-Card for my Laptop Windows XP Pro and
-Playstation 3 capable of sharing info and use printer

At the moment all of them have internet w different IP's (000.000.0.001, 000.000.0.002,etc.). What I want to achieve is that I can use the Printer that is connected via USB to my PC Vista (desktop) and share files. Right now the only thing been able to do is that my PC Vista see my Laptop but Can't find my PC on my laptop. Anybody, Help?
-When I turn On my media sharing in my PS3, my internet on Laptop loses it while PS3 search and find, then, because laptop lost wireless, the PS3 looses the laptop and I get wireless back. I knowis a stupid setting but tired of workin back n forth. Thanks

I have a broadband internet connection at home which had a modem and only one LAN cable. Now I have 2 laptop's one with Microsoft XP and other MS-Vista. Whenever I try to connect internet the one with XP...

if you had say one desktop and one laptop I would say to buy another LAN card for the desktop and enable internet connection sharing on it for the other computer but with two laptops that might not be possible and you will need a router.
But routers are pretty cheap nowadays and you can probably find a basic 4 port router on eBay for around $20 (you don’t really need to spend the extra money on a wireless one unless of course both laptops have wireless connections then you might find that a wireless router to be pretty useful.)
But to answer your question YES you need a router since a router will take your IP address and split it up into multiple internal IP addresses and allow more that one connection to the internet that will appear as one connection to your ISP

Wireless internet connection

I may be able to help with this...but I need a detailed description of how you have things connected between the XP desktop, the cable, modem, the Linksys router, and the laptop. Also, is the Linksys router new?

Typically, the wan port on the wireless router connects directly to the cable modem with a cat5 network cable....then the desktop pc connects to the router...on port 1 for example...with a similar cable. Once the wireless router is set up properly, the laptop should then be able to connect using wireless.

Vista/router/wireless connection

Make sure that all the wireless cards are set in the properties to obtain an ip address automatically, dissable the wired lan adpter connections as this can confuse the router. Restart all the pc's and then right click on the wireless pc icon in your task bar and then click view wireless networks and make sure that you are connected to your network and that the internet is available, known as local & internet in Vista. open up internet explorer, go to tools, internet options and delete browsing history cookies and temp files and then refresh the page as the proxy server will need to refresh.
