i brough an archos 104 and i can't put music to it. when i connect the usb wire tto my computer nothing comes out. i try looking for it but nothing happens. my mp3 didnt come with a cd or anything. what can be the problem and how can i fix it?
Try going in to whatever music player program your computer offers and to to file.... browse...... my computer..... and there should be a usb drive if its pluged in it will say archos.... click on it...... and select open.... then it will come up you can then transfer music to it just like any other drive or folder on your computer try windows media player go under the sync option then just drag and drop

Step 1. Download the firmware to your computer-->click HERE to download the update file When you download the update file, your browser may warn you that the file 'could be harmful'. This is normal because browsers are not familiar with files that have a .AOS extension and suspect that they could be malicious. These files are not harmful to your computer.
Step 2. Turn on your ARCHOS device and connect it to your computer with the USB cable
Step 3. On the ARCHOS, choose to connect and wait a few seconds for your device to be detected by the computer
Step 4. Copy and paste the downloaded firmware (.AOS file) to the ARCHOS device.
Case 1: Your ARCHOS is detected by your computer as a Hard Drive (E: for example) in Windows® Explorer. Paste the update file directly onto the ARCHOS hard drive icon.
Case 2: Your ARCHOS device is detected as a 'Mobile Device' in Windows® Explorer (not as a hard drive) and you see just two folders Data and Media when you open it. Paste the update file into the folder called Data.
Case 3: Your ARCHOS device is detected as a 'Mobile Device' in Windows® Explorer (not as a hard drive) and you see Internal Hard Drive when you open it. Open this Internal Hard Drive icon and you will see the various ARCHOS folders inside (Video, Music, etc.). Paste the update file into this area but be careful not to paste it into any of the folders there.
Step 5. Disconnect the Device Unplug the USB cable (for 'Mobile Device' connections) or use the "safe disconnect" green arrow icon (for Hard drive connection) in the system tray before unplugging the USB cable.
Step 6. On your ARCHOS device, click on "Update Firmware" Click on the "tab" button to show the settings screen. Select the "System" icon and then click on the "Update Firmware" button. For the ARCHOS 104, 202, & 204, go to the settings and open the icon "System" where you can find the Update Firmware button.
For Windows XP users: verify the following operating system requirements are met. - Windows XP SP2 or higher - Windows Media Player 10 or higher Download and install the latest Windows Media Player if it's not installed. For Windows Vista users: If the player is seen in My Computer when using MTP mode, but not showing in Windows Media Player. - Download the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939211. - Run the hotfix. NOTE: If you are trying to connect to a Computer at work that is part of a network, there may be user right restrictions that are set to disable access to new hardware or stop any program installations. You may need to check with your IT administrator to see if this is causing the problem. Next:-- Refresh the driver Connect the Sansa player to the PC The screen on your player should turn on, show 'Connected' and indicate the battery charging or full. - If the player does not turn on try other USB ports or on another computer if one is readily available. Ensure you are connecting directly to the computer USB port and not to a USB hub. NOTE: - If there is nothing showing on the screen and the player does show up in as a storage device in an explorer window, then the screen is just not working. If you receive the error "USB Device Not Recognized" on the computer, the player is most likely failed. Additional troubleshooting is unlikely to correct the problem. Next - Check under Device Manager 1. Right-click My Computer, and select Manage. 2. Click Device Manager on the left pane. ffffff
Once you connect your archos 5 to the computer, it will ask you whether u want to "enable USB' or "charge only"....select enable USB (OK). then go to "My Computer", and you will see a graphical image of the archos 5, under the name "portable devices"..
Double click on it, until you get to the "music" folder..and once you open this folder, you cn start copy-paste....- where you copy the music file from a folder in your computer, then paste it to the 'music ' folder on your archos..and you're done!!!!
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code (104) on it These are the steps i followed
* Use the computer for this process that you always used for this archos
* Download the firware Upgrade 2.1
* Plug the Archos to Pc
* When the white screen comes up do format
* Wait until all done then put the firmware in to the root sector of the Archos
* Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc first and then unplug the cable.
* Do not pick any option on the Archos screen
* Just turn it off from the power button by holding it until it turns off
* Wait about 5 minutes and plug in back to pc
it will come up with white screen again but this time it will start
Update you will see the progress bar moving wait until it is all done
and it will shut off. Turn it back on Your archos will be back to normal.
When you go to download from Archos site it will explain how to download depending upon how your device pops up on your Pc.

Ijust bought a archos 5 250gb , conected via usb and drag some music from pc to archos . A few hours late the archos stopped, the pc don´t recognize the archos .
I pressed the on/off and vol together and formated the aarchos .
now had been disaster , the display just appeared the ARCOS Entertainement you way . the pc don´t regognizer the ARCHOS, NOTHING APPEARED .
i had same issue. nothing worked until i saw a guy who fixed his by dropping it on floor?
i dropped my archos in the protective case from 2 feet off floor. the bloody thing when came back to life, 100% good. i think the hard drive was stuck and the fall fixed it!! it cannot hurt as yours is broken still i guess. hope it works for you to
go to archos firmware and download version 2.1.04 to your pc or laptop and save it in a folder then get ur mp4 turn it on and go format you will get a screen that says done leave it on that and connect to your pc or laptop it will recognise your mp4 then go in my computer and open 405 and open your save file and drag the save file into the 405 but NOT into a folder below them and after it has\copied turn the 405 off and start it up should be as good as new
3. Copied update to root of archos drive and rebooted
4. Archoes installed the update and rebooted and came up to desktop again
5. reinstalled plugins (thank god I saved them) copied plug-in to root.
6. Back on the road again
connect the usb cable for your archos to a computer. it then should auto connect on your computer. from there, just copy paste anything you want to watch/listen to the appropriate folders. example: video (for tv & movies), music, etc
