Question about Dell 1.44 Floppy Drive - Optiplex G1 0009886C-06 (0009886C06) Floppy Drive
Hi, Your idea is basically correct. Other alternatives are: 1. Boot from and run Basic MS-DOS or FreeDOS with disk utilities in the FDD of the PC where the HD(s) installed. Set to boot first in FDD in the CMOS/BIOS; 2. Run MS-DOS or FreeDOS with disk utilities in a CD in the CD ROM of the PC where the HD(s) installed. Set to boot first in FDD in the CMOS/BIOS; 3. Use an external enclosure to connect the IDE & power connections of the HDs to a USB port of another working Windows PC. Is is similar to your idea but you need not open up the 2nd PC nut would require the interface device. Hope this be of some help/idea. post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Hi again,
When you connect any of the "several HDs from dell optiplex pcs" as a slave to a second PC, you must set the jumper at the rear of that HD to Slave. Normally there are instructions on the top sticker of the HDs to illustrate this. Once physically installed after powering up your 2nd PC, you must enter the CMOS/BIOS to auto detect your temporary new primary slave HD. Once auto/detected, Save & exit. On normal Windows, go to my computer, right click on the 2nd HD and click on format. You will have a choice of FAT32 or NTFS, select as you like. Pls remember to format only which is one of the ""several HDs from dell optiplex pcs."
Cheers.
You can delete each folder or Ctrl + A to select all and delete.
Though it may be better to format the slave HD.
A couple of questions pls:
What Windows do you have?
What Anti-Virus are you using?
What drive letter was assigned to the slave HD?
Alternately you can use Partition Magic to format the slave drive.

I don't know enough to follow your inst. I can only get dell to load then it can't find primary 1 or secondary 1 . It say's strike f1 or f2 to continue. I do that and I'm confused from that point on. I've never done f2 setup. I was told by dell tech "while holding Alt press e-f-b and it will fix bios for me. It didn't work for me. I tried a dell reinstallation cd,it won't run. I unpluged everything and replugged and made no diff.
I don't understand f2 setup.
Thanks. I have HDDS that I've forgotten what is on them,,my pictures or win OS,, But I don't care now,I just want the HDDS clean so I can install winxp. I did get it to recognize my cd-rom in the f-2 setup. But the primary 0
and primary 1 are unknown devices in f-2 set up. I click "space to change" and I get several options. Auto, user 1,user 2, ect.Which one do I choose ? If I bought a new HD and installed it,do you think that would solve this problem ? dhyat3@aol.com
I did go to my computer and ,right clicked, the HDD that is SLAVE. Nothing happened. A box opened and I clicked on format,,nothing happened. If I open that HDD and delete each folder one at a time until it is empty,,will I get the same results ? dhyat3@aol.com
Win xp- I'm not online so I haven't setup any virus protection yet and F was assigned auto by win xp. I could not get win xp to recognize
the slave so I gave up and walked away for a few hrs. When I returned it was rec as F . ??
Another time I could not get the modem to install. I walked away and returned,,it too was installed auto. I wish the same would happen with this HDD. Thanks Lots
