My hard disk access has become terribly slow and hence all applications run very very slow. I verified and ensured that it is indeed a hard disk access problem since the CPU and memory usage were not much. The hard disk LED blinks continuously. I also lost a couple of files' contents. When this happened, I immediately stopped using that laptop and switched to another one. It seems to me to be a hardware issue but I wanted to confirm before I take it to the service center.
Often times, when a PC has be used for a long period of time, information becomes fragmented on the disk, causing read errors and various problems similar to what your experiencing.
To rectify this issue:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > "Disk Defragmenter"
I would also suggest using a free tool called Ccleaner. This is a wonderful maintenance tool.
