If you have severe computer issues, it's best just to format the drive and start from scratch, using the system restoration disks provided by Compaq. Is that what you'd like to do? And, do you have the original disks that came with your PC?

Disk wil not format/keep dipaying format fail

hi .. nt sure whether your talking about an external hard disk or somethingelse..

But here goes

In detail

Causes
  • If the hard drive is not setup correctly in the BIOS or is not jumpered correctly, this may cause the BIOS and Windows to detect the drive incorrectly.
  • Viruses or spyware program are capable of conflicting with Windows programs such as the format utility built into Windows.
  • If the partition on the hard drive is corrupt or damaged, this would cause Windows to stop the format process or show an error message.
  • If the computer system does not have the latest BIOS and hardware drivers, and the operating system does not have the latest Service Packs installed, Windows may not address or recognize the drive parameters correctly.
  • You are attempting to format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT32 in Windows 2000, XP, or 2003., win7
  • If the hard drive or data cable is physically damaged or defective.
  • There may be a conflict between the hard drive and another device (on the same IDE cable).
Solution please try

It is recommended to low-level format the hard drive to resolve any partition corruption issues that may be present. For directions on how to low-level format a hard drive

If it's an internal hard drive, please ensure that the latest BIOS is installed for the computer, motherboard, or PCI controller card. BIOS updates can be obtained from the computer, motherboard, or controller card manufacturer. The BIOS should be setup to Auto-Detect the hard drive. If there is a Mode option, this should be setup as LBA, Large, or Auto

  1. Ensure that the latest drivers are installed for the hardware in the computer. Drivers for the hardware should be available from the respective hardware manufacturers.
If this occurs on an external hard drive, connect the drive to another USB of FireWire port on the computer. You can also connect the hard drive to another computer system to perform the format. This issue may be caused by attempting to reformat a FAT32 partition as NTFS without deleting the partition first. You will need to repartition and reformat the hard drive

hope this helps you out

How i parttion my hard drive and install xp?

While installing XP, the system will prompt you after you accept the licensing agreement about what to do with harddisk available space. the options will be
  • Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick)
  • Format the partition by using the FAT file system (Quick)
  • Format the partition by using the NTFS file system
  • Format the partition by using the FAT file system
  • Leave the current file system intact (no changes)
Select which ever file system you want and NTFS is more used in now-a-days, so select one option in them. Select the amount of hard disk you want to allow for each partition. Thats it .. you are ready to go to select one partition to install you xp
there is a link from microsoft which might help you with any other issues you may face while doing partitions. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348
hope this helps

there is a registry error in your HD, you need to rectify that by installing any registry cleaner(try Tuneup Utility...downlaod from piratebay)...if that does not solve the issue....only a low level format can clean the HD...format your C drive only if you have multiple partitions in the HD

Hi- We have a 2 TB tower partitioned into 4

Try downloading EASUS Partition manager http://www.partition-tool.com/. I have not used this with FAT formats but it works fine with NTFS, and allows you to alter partition sizes without losing data.

As far as I know it is only supported by Windows, so you may have to use a Windows machine to re-partition.

Hard Drive lost capacity

You cannot just 'loose' most of the capacity on a hard drive unless you have some serious issue and if that was the case, I would not even recommend you using it! What I suspect, because of its size, is that you are only seeing one of the formatted (recovery) partition. In order to use the rest of the hard disk, with the proviso that you want to keep the existing small partition, you need to create and format additional partitions. This is not a trivial task, but the following is the summary on where to find the facility: Control Panel -> Admistrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management -> Your Hard disk will be displayed with all existing partitions: after which you can use the context menu to delete/create partitions, Format partitions and assign a drive letter so that you can use the formatted partitions. Hope it helps: let me know how you go!

1.I will suggest you please partitioned it properly.

2. Check your Registry. Some times people use to FIX Registry for Reading multiple Partitioned External Drive.
3. You must require partition.

4. Have you check the cable which was supplied with the HD. As other cable may not support properly.

Enjoy
