Question about Linksys WRT55AG Router

I have a static ip that wont access the WAN through router.

Router is setup as DHCP, but I have a device that has to be a static IP. I want this device to access the Internet. What setting will allow this.

    You can't have both unless you have two Network cards in your computer. You can only have DHCP or Static on all devices...

I want to make sure that you aren't confusing the routers DHCP setting for your ISP, versus, setting the router as DHCP so that your clients can receive an address inside your wireless router. If you go to this page, you can find the routers user guide manual, you'll only need to make sure you input the correct version for your router either version 1 or version 2.

On page 21 of the pdf manual. You'll find information on setting the DHCP server settings. Here you can assign a static IP to your clientl. The only thing you'll need from that device is the MAC address.

How to convert a Switch into Routed

Unfortunately, you can't use two routers together in that manner. You must have a device in between them such as a switch or bridge or you'll have to disable the DHCP server settings in the second router. The second router then pretty much becomes a switch you may then use all the ports on the second router with the exception of the WAN port it must remain unoccupied. However, if you need wireless connectivity in another location far away from your main router then your only solution would be to indeed purchase an actual access point/bridge device

What is DHCP Reservation?
A DHCP reservation is a permanent IP address assignment. It is a specific IP address within a DHCP scope that is permanently reserved for leased use to a specific DHCP client.
You can configure a DHCP reservation in your DHCP server when you need to reserve a permanent IP address assignment. Use reservations for the DHCP enabled devices like print and file servers or other application servers which always have the fixed IP address on network.


Step 1: Access the router's web-based setup page. For instructions, click here
Step 2: When the router's web-based setup page appears, click Setup.
Step 3: Click on Basic Setup.
Step 4: Make sure that DHCP Server is Enabled. Then, click the DHCP Reservation button if you want to assign a fixed local IP address to a MAC address.

Linksis router wont work help me out


First of all contact your isp and get your connection settings. If you are able to setup the router using the cd provided then good. If you are still having problems then go ahead and contact linksys (remember linksys charges for the support). I suggest get a technician to assist you in setting up.

TRENDnet TEW-432BRP router cannot obtain IP through DHCP


it seems that ur PC & cable modem configuration is ok, now the problem is with ur router WAN interface configuration. the problem would be one out of 2 - first to check whether ur router wan interface is configured properly to obtain IP address from DHCP (if possible, u can give the static ip address with same series as cable modem) second to check with ur ISP.

Please remember that D-Link AirPlus G wireless devices are pre-configured to connect together, right out of the box, with their default settings.For a typical wireless setup at home (as shown above), please do the following:
1) You will need broadband Internet access (a Cable or DSL-subscriber line into
your home or office)
2) Consult with your Cable or DSL provider for proper installation of the modem
3) Connect the Cable or DSL modem to the DI-524 Wireless Broadband Router
(see the printed Quick Installation Guide included with your router.)
4) If you are connecting a desktop computer to your network, install the D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 wireless PCI adapter into an available PCI slot on your desktop computer. You may also install the DWL-G520, or the DWL-520. (See the printed Quick Installation Guide included with the network adapter.)
5) Install the D-Link DWL-G630 wireless Cardbus adapter into a laptop computer.

Using the Configuration Menu

Whenever you want to configure your network or the
DI-524, you can access the Configuration Menu by
opening the web-browser and typing in the IP Address
of the DI-524. The DI-524 default IP Address is shown
bellow:
-Open the web browser
-Type in the IP Address of
the Router (http://192.168.0.1)

SSID- Service Set Identifier (SSID) is the name designated for a specific wireless local area network (WLAN). The SSID’s factory default setting is default. The SSID can be easily changed to connect to an existing wireless network or to establish a new wireless network.

Channel- 6 is the default channel. All devices on the network must share the same channel. (Note: The wireless adapters will automatically scan and match the wireless setting.)

WEP- Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a wireless security protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). WEP provides security by encrypting the data that is sent over the WLAN. Select Enabled or Disabled. Disabled is the default setting. (Note: If you enable encryption on the DI-524 make sure to also enable encryption on all the wireless clients or wireless connection will not be established.)

WEP Encryption- Select the level of encryption desired: 64-bit, or 128-bit

Key Type- Select HEX or ASCII

Keys 1-4- Input up to 4 WEP keys; select the one you wish to use.

Host Name- The Host Name is optional but may be required by some ISPs. The default host name is the device name of the Router and may be changed.

MAC Address- The default MAC Address is set to the WAN’s physical interface MAC address on the Broadband Router. It is not recommended that you change the default MAC address unless required by your ISP.

Clone MAC Address- The default MAC address is set to the WAN’s physical interface MAC address on the Broadband Router. You can use the “Clone MAC Address” button to copy the MAC address of the Ethernet Card installed by your ISP and replace the WAN MAC address with the MAC address of the router. It is not recommended that you change the default MAC address unless required by your ISP.

DNS Address- Choose Static IP Address if all WAN IP information is provided to you by your ISP. You will need to enter in the IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS address(es) provided to you by your ISP. Each IP address entered in the fields must be in the appropriate IP form, which are four octets separated by a dot (x.x.x.x). The Router will not accept the IP address if it is not in this format.

IP Address- Input the public IP Address provided by your ISP.

Subnet Mask- Input your Subnet mask. (All devices in the network must have the same subnet mask.)

ISP Gateway Address- Input the public IP address of the ISP to which you are connecting.

Primary DNS Address- Input the primary DNS (Domain Name Server) IP address provided by your ISP.

Secondary DNS Address- This is optional.

Choose PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) if your ISP uses a PPPoE connection. Your ISP will provide you with a username and password. This option is typically used for DSL services. Select Dynamic PPPoE to obtain an IP address automatically for your PPPoE connection. Select Static PPPoE to use a static IP address for your PPPoeE connection.

PPPoE- Choose this option if your ISP uses PPPoE. (Most DSL users will select this option.)

Dynamic PPPoE- receive an IP Address automatically from your ISP.

Static PPPoE-you have an assigned (static) IP Address.

User Name- Your PPPoE username provided by your ISP.

Retype Password- Re-enter the PPPoE password

Service Name- Enter the Service Name provided by your ISP (optional).

IP Address- This option is only available for Static PPPoE. Enter the static IP Address for the PPPoE connection.

Primary DNS Address- Primary DNS IP address provided by our ISP

Secondary DNS Address- This option is only available for Static PPPoE. Enter the static IP Address for the PPPoE connection.

Maximum Idle Time- Enter a maximum idle time during which Internet connection is maintained during inactivity. To diable this feature, enable Autoreconnect.

MTU- Maximum Transmission Unit-1492 is the default setting-you may need to change the MTU for optimal performance with your specific ISP.

Auto-reconnect- If enabled, the DI-524 will automatically connect to your ISP after your system is restarted or if the PPPoE connection is dropped.

LAN is short for Local Area Network. This is considered your internal network. These are the IP settings of the LAN interface for the DI-524. These settings may be referred to as Private settings. You may change the LAN IP address if needed. The LAN IP address is private to your internal network and cannot be seen on the Internet.

IP Address- The IP address of the LAN interface. The default IP address is: 192.168.0.1.

Subnet Mask- The subnet mask of the LAN interface. The default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

Local Domain- This field is optional. Enter in the local domain name.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Control Protocol. The DI-524 has a built-in DHCP server.
The DHCP Server will automatically assign an IP address to the computers on the LAN/
private network. Be sure to set your computers to be DHCP clients by setting their TCP/
IP settings to “Obtain an IP Address Automatically.” When you turn your computers on,
they will automatically load the proper TCP/IP settings provided by the DI-524. The
DHCP Server will automatically allocate an unused IP address from the IP address pool
to the requesting computer. You must specify the starting and ending address of the IP
address pool.

DHCP Server- Select Enabled or Disabled. The default setting is Enabled.
Starting
IP Address- The starting IP address for the DHCP server’s IP assignment
Ending
IP Address- The ending IP address for the DHCP server’s IP assignment
Lease Time- The length of time for the IP lease. Enter the Lease time. The
default setting is one hour

Just a bit of explanation. E0 interface is for inside network (LAN interface). E1 is for outside (ISP or WAN physical interface). Dialer1 is for PPPoE (the "actual"/logical WAN interface). The 1.0.0.13 is ISP provided static IP address for the use of the server. This configuration example is for running FTP server, which uses the standard TCP port 20 and 21.

The LAN uses 10.10.10.0 network with 255.255.255.0 subnet for both servers and workstations. All servers within the LAN use static IP address. The router is configured as DHCP server to give out IP info (IP addresses, subnet mask, DNS) to workstations that are configured as DHCP client.

Basically I suggest that you deploy NAT (Network Address Translation) and PAT (Port Address Translation) to setup your own servers behind Cisco router. The NAT is used to translate the ISP's given static IP address to your local IP address. The PAT is used to translate TCP ports (the port 20 and 21) between the two IP addresses.

When using NAT/PAT, keep in mind that the Internet-accessible servers are seen from the Internet as their NAT/PAT-ed IP address (the Public IP address) and not the local IP address (not the Private IP address). This understanding is very important when you or someone need to test connectivity to the server and/or when you need to create filter (access list or ACL for short) to allow only certain incoming traffic from the Internet and block others.

Instruments used in this illustration are pretty much standard for running your own servers. Please note that IP addresses, username, and password are changed. However, you could always modify the configuration to suit your situation.

This sample configuration assumes that you have a block of IP from ISP. There is a dedicated Public IP address for the router WAN interface (the Dialer1 interface) and another dedicated Public IP address for the server PAT IP address. If you only have a single Public IP address for both router WAN interface and server PAT IP address, there are several ways to configure the router.

One way is to use the same command as shown in sample configuration.

This one configuration way is suitable when you have static IP address from your ISP and you know exactly what the IP address is. In this case you have the 1.1.1.14 single static IP address for both the WAN interface and Public server IP address.

When you are unsure which IP address you receive from the ISP, or when your Public IP address keep changing; then another way to configure the static PAT is following

With situation of dynamic IP address, at some point you still need to know the exact Public IP address you receive from your ISP for server connection testing and production time. To find out, you can issue show ip interface brief command on the router. You will then see the associated WAN interface Public IP address.

I cant open an ip address for an assigned webpage.


There are several private address ranges that may be affecting the operations you are attempting to perform see table

IP Address Ranges Reserved for Private Use
Class Networks A 10.0.0.0 through 10.255.255.255 B 172.16.0.0 through 172.31.0.0 C 192.168.0.0 through 192.168.255.0
All addresses in this range in your network are only directly addressable to machines within your network at most by default. The router to your ISP and the internet as a whole maps these addresses onto the IP address assigned statically or dynamically by your ISP to the WAN side of your router using an address translation (NAT) service. So where you are attempting to connect to this device from may be significant. You may need to review your setup guide to see if it references router configuration requirements to support access to the Web_xpander port from devices not attached to your internal network. If you have multiple internal networks (address ranges and not devices) this could also be an issue.

Secondly -- does the Setup software for the device tell you the IP address assuming it is dynamically assigned. Otherwise how would you know what the address is. Static assignment could resolve that issue however you must understand your network to assign your own address. Given a theoretical network where the router gateway is 192.169.0.1 and the network mask is 255.255.255.0 the valid network addresses are 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.255. A router or other device supporting DHCP address assignment reserves another range such as 192.168.0.100 for 50 leases (ending at 192.168.0.149) for dynamic assignment to requesting network adapters. Ignoring the 0 and 255 address this leaves open to the network administrator (you in your home) the possibility of assigning static IP address in the ranges of say 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.99 and 192.168.0.150 - 192.168.0.254 or so. You as well as the DHCP server are required to assure that there are no duplicate IP addresses assigned on your network. So statically assigning 192.168.0.100 (which is DHCP assignable in our case) could and would most likely result in duplicate addressing and network problems.
