The pump needs to be primed by adding water to the basket. If it still doesnt start it might need the a rebuild which usually involves replacing the bearings(cost about $150.00 NJ area).

I have a Haywood pump and filter - S180t - I started it up after winter and I have no backwash or rinse pressure??

Did you drain it completely before Winter? If water was inside the pump, it could have been damaged by expanding freezing ice. The impeller could be trashed (i.e. ''physically broken'').

This sand filter and pump is 1 season old, when I turn on pump it makes a humming noise and will trip the reset. Is the motor no good or is there something I can check.

this might be a case of pump was not stored correctly from 1st season , now pump shaft has become dry and tight , well if your handy with a phillips head you could try and dissasembe pump and lube shaft with waterproof grease ( kitchen faucet parts in hardware store)
i allways store my pump filled with food grade antifreeze (rv grade) and hoses capped off and pointed up , it stays all winter inside an unheated shed with no problems for two swiming seasons now

Center pipe was cracked when we took it out to replace the sand what would cause this plus there was sand under the bottom cover

Typically, the cracking of internal filter tank components is due to freezing temperatures over the Winter season. You should always COMPLETELY drain all water from your filter and store it inside during the winter.

Another reason is over chlorination of your pool water and/or adding chemicals directly to your water thru the wall skimmer.

My hayward sand filter is leaking out of the side seam. Can I seal it? Thank you for any help.

Most likely not This is tough plastic, and you have have water pressure in tank. Did the filter get overpressured? Did it freeze in the winter. Try Craig's list for a good used filter.

No suction from hayward variflow pro series sand filter

Try these tips. I am guessing that one of these is the reason that your pool filter is not working properly. If you try these suggestions and they don't work, let me know and I will trouble shoot with you again.
1. Check skimmer and pump strainer baskets for debris.
2. Check for restrictions in intake and discharge lines.
3. Check for air leak in intake line (indicated by bubbles returning to pool.
4. Backwash your filter.
5. Be sure Vari-Flo valve is set on “Filter” position.

I turned the pump on and it is making a humming noise but is not working

the most common problem for the symptoms you describe is a bad start capacitor. There should be a hump on the motor. Remove the two screws that attach it and replace the capacitor inside with an exact match. If it has a start/run capacitor, it may located under the end cover of the motor.

Low return pressure

if you are referring to the the guage on the filter, this is really too high. You should backwash and would like to see it down to 8-12. if not, have you changed your sand?. I like to change it every other year.
