Craftsman Transmission problem

I have a Craftsman Garden Tractor 26.0 HP 54 " mower with automatic transmission or transaxle Hydro gear. I have had probloem with the transmission after it gets hot would slow down. Now the transmission will not do any thing forward or reverse. I have checked the belts and everthig appears to be normal but no drive out of the transaxle. Any Ideas?

Some of these tractors have a friction wheel that is driven off of a flat wheel on the bottom of the engine drive shaft. The rubber ring on this friction wheel could be worn out, or it could be out of adjustment.

Tansmission oil type for model# 917.254740

Hi,

Your Craftsman is equipped with a Agri-Fab transaxle, the predecessor to the Hydro-Gear brand. The recommended oil is 10w-30. Unfortunately, the transaxle on your craftsman tractor is not serviceable. It is sealed for life. The only way to change the oil is to remove the unit from the tractor, tip it upside down and drain the oil out the reservoir plug.

Craftsman hydro gear transaxle problem

check the brake for sticking and dragging. check the bypass lever, make sure it's disengaged fully. did you just fix a flat rear tire? if so, the square key that links the axle and wheel fell out. do you pull a heavy garden cart around? that can stretch a belt and overheat the trans. last thought, check the belt and see if it came off a pulley, i know that should have been first but it's late and i'm tired. good night

I have a 25 hp -50 Filling transaxle with fluid?

Hi, I will try to help you. In the rear of the tractor on the right hand side as you stand behind the mower if you get down and look at right over the axle you will see a small hose with a plug in the end of it and that is where you put fluid in. Hope this helps. George
