Can't Find 2nd ram to upgrade memory

I purchased Acer extensa 4630-4900 for my daughter and want to get the ram up to 4 gb (2 gb right now). I just replaced the memory in my hp pavillion dv6000 without any problem... so easy. Now I've opened the Acer and can only find one 1gb ram stick? Where is the second one? how can I find it to upgrade the ram.

After reading your responses, I decided to look a little deeper... I was surprised to see that the notebook had one 2gb stick and the slot on top was simply empty. Quick and easy once I realized this... I had assumed that the notebook would have 2 1gb sticks... see what happens when you assume... Thanks for your support and assistance. :)

Thanks, this is the most comprehensive answer I've received. I just discovered that the notebook only had one stick installed (one 2gb stick) and the other was simply empty... so I didn't see it (I was looking for a stick not a blank slot!

Sometimes Laptops will have 1 slot internal and 1 slot on the bottom side thats readily accessible via a removable plate.

You'll be perfectly find with the 1GB internal and adding the 2GB to replace the 1GB stick on the bottom side.
Also Windows XP and VISTA 32bit can only address and use about 3.25GB of ram anyway.

Recently Microsoft released a patch that's kind of tricking consumers, People calling and complaining so much to MS and PC manufacturers about not seeing all their ram when they installed 4GB so they Released a fix that shows it as 4GB but still the 32bit OS cant use the extra over 3GB

Some laptops have the modules side by side, in the case of your laptop, if the SODIMM modules are not one on top of the other, then the likely scenario is that only one of the SODIMM modules is available. The one on the bottom of the laptop. The other SODIMM module would be on the inside of the actual laptop. Sometimes the module is fairly accessible (like right underneath the keyboard) or sometimes you actually have to remove a few components to be able to access it. According to the ACER website, only the one SODIMM module is accessible, on the underside of the laptop. You can look up the specs for your laptop here:

http://gd.panam.acer.com/home/ You'll have to select your Acer model from the menus and then navigate to the "Document" tab, there you'll see the user manual.

Installing memory
Follow these steps to install memory:
1 Turn off the computer, unplug the AC adapter (if connected) and remove
the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access its base.
2 Remove the screws from the memory cover; then lift up and remove the
memory cover.
3 (a) Insert the memory module diagonally into the slot, then (b) gently press
it down until it clicks into place.
4 Replace the memory cover and secure it with the screw.
5 Reinstall the battery pack, and reconnect the AC adapter.
6 Turn on the computer.

The second memory bank, if not soldered to the board, would be found underneath the keyboard, or any other shields that may be beneath the keyboard.

This was the best I could find for illustration:
http://www.catnip.co.uk/projects/gnu/linux/502t/exdrivechange.php

I am aware that it is not your model and that it is for hard drive replacement, but at least if your worried about opening your laptop, this may calm your fears a little.

I have Acer laptop Aspire 5570z module Zr1 with memory 1GB I want to increase memory 2GB or 3GB Is it possible or not What will be the expenditure?

Your laptop's RAM is upgradeable to up to 4 GB using two DDR2 533/667 MHz SODIMM modules.

So your upgrade options here are:
1. Buy a 1 GB DDR2 533/667 MHz SODIMM module & install it to get a total RAM of 2 GB (Price around US$ 25).
2. Buy a 2 GB DDR2 533/667 MHz SODIMM module & install it to get a total RAM of 3 GB (Price around US$ 45).

We purchased a hp touchsmart 600 with 4 gb of ram and ordered an additional 4 gb for a total of 8 gb of ram. We got (2) 2 gig but there are only slots for 2 memory sticks. We sent them back and now we have...

First find out if 4Gb sticks of the right type are available for your machine, and that the machine supports that much RAM. Then make sure you carefully order 2 x 4Gb sticks.

Acer Extensa 5620Z will not work with more than 2GB RAM??

parrotheadpc is incorrect in stating "you can only have a total of 2048 mb installed".

the 5620Z accepts 2 x 2 GB SODIMM RAM, the machine boots and shows the full 4 GB in the BIOS.

the full 4 GB works with the Ubuntu x64 installer.

Windows XP x32 goes BSOD on startup.

Windows 7 x64 install from DVD fails with same BSOD error.

conclusion: this is a Windows-Extensa 5620Z incompatibility that would require a fix by ACER at the BIOS level.

question: there may be specific memory modules 2 x 2 GB which do work--anyone have it work with Windows?

Problem with upgrading my acer extensa 5620z memory to 4GB

Hi there.
I recommend you get another stick of SODIMM to replace what seems to be the faulty stick.
If you are using XP or Vista X86 (32bit) then the system will only recognize 2.8 - 3GB of memory, only 64bit operating systems recognize the full 4GB.

Good luck ad thanks for using FixYa!!
