No suction at all.

My Dyson DC17 stopped sucking. The brushes still turn, but that's it. Any ideas?

brushes turn but vacuum does not pickup

I have the exact same problem. The beater still works, but there's no suction. I had just emptied the canister and was vaccuuming, not realizing that it wasn't hooked up right. Once I fixed that and cleared the clog, then I immediately had another clog. I cleared that and then the suction just stopped. Any ideas?

Actually, after letting mine sit for awhile, it started sucking again. This must be a common problem with Dysons. My friend had the same issue and it cost $100 to fix it.

There is probably an object caught in one of the tubes. Or something by the filter.

When I vacuum carpets the hose suction does not stop and the main brush area is losing suction because of it.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If your machine continues to have suction through the wand after you've reclined it into the vacuuming position, a blockage may be jamming the changeover valve. To check for this, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMAL

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call us free on 1-866-693-9766, or email us at askdysonUS@dyson.com

Best wishes,

Dyson dc17 No suction

i have the same problem and none of these solutions help. they are all for if suction works but brush doesn't. that isn't what she is saying. brush motor works fine. It's the Suction motor that never kicks on. Mine is doing it now and I would love a fix for it. Resetting suction motor. Not brush....

Dyson dc17 animal stopped sucking. brush still

Make sure the flexible hose that connects the beater brush housing up to the connection up by the dust bin is still connected. It could also have a hole in it so check for that as well.

Dyson DC17, front roller motor stopped

Are you sure it's dead? The motor will turn off if there's too much resistance. Unplug the vacuum, remove the obstruction, plug it back in and then firmly press the beater brush on/off button which is located next to the main on/off button.

I am now out of warrenty and refuse to pay that kind of money for a machine that was alreaydy over priced. So I would love to know if you found an answer to your question...

My dyson DC17 will not turn on unless the handle is pulled back.(into the vacuuming position) The attachment hose will not work at all (0 suction thru it). I've checked the hose and made sure there is no...

Not sure if I can help, but I'll try. The DC17 has two motors: the vacuum motor and a separate motor for the brush bar. It is normal that the brush motor works only when the handle is pulled back in the vacuuming position - that's the way it's made. So, when you say "my DC17 won't turn on", I'm not sure if you mean the vac motor, the brush motor, or both. If the vacuum motor won't turn on, then you've got a problem I can't help you with.
As for no suction through the hose, I have to ask... are you sure your vacuum motor is working at all? Even with the hose stored away, the machine still relies on suction through that hose. If you're sure the motor is working, then either you've got a blockage that you haven't yet found (there's at least one inspection port, a sort of U tube at bottom right of machine, that you need to check), or it could be that you've got a hole in the flexible hose (which opens only when the hose is extended).
Sorry if this is a bit garbled, but I'm puzzled by your problem. If you want to come back with more details I'll try again for you!

Bar doesn't turn unless vacuum is pushed.

Oh for crying out loud! That button has been there since day one but I NEVER looked at it! I guess I thought is there to be symetrical! I also sucked up carpet thread. I was okay for a while but when I then sucked up my dustcloth the brush quit. Usually this stuff happens right before the guests are due so at least this time I got to fix it without pressure!
