Is there a way to change the contrast as two of my units have a barely readable screen as the numbers are too light to read easy

Too light numbers usually indicate weak batteries. If you're sure the batteries are new then the display is done.

2. Adjust the contrast by pressing and releasing the 2nd key followed by pressing and releasing the up arrow; repeat as necessary. To adjust or lighten the display, use the down arrow.
3. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the CLEAR key. While holding CLEAR, reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the CLEAR key and then press it one more time to remove the message.
4. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the DEL key. While holding DEL reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system.

Profit Calculator KS1000, how do I change the dead battery? Where is it?

Turn calculator over
Remove two visible Phillip screws
Gently pry up and remove rubber feet on all four corners-remove screws
Button cell battery (original: VINNIC L1131, replacements: Energizer 389/390 or Duracell D390)
Location: upper right hand corner under metal battery clip
To replace battery: gently pry up left tab and slide new battery with + side facing up (writing visible).
Gently push tab back down
Next: Look at circuit board, locate double arrows
Follow directions: "please press "RESET" after replacing battery"
I just touched the metal flow solder plate (small circle with squiggles) above the words "RESET" with a small screwdriver
TA-DA...it works

The digits are barely visible, too hard to read. how do I adjust this?

Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the up-arrow key to increase the contrast. Obviously, if you go too far repeat the process with the down-arrow in place of the up-arrow.

Try a hard reset:

Press and hold the 2ND, Left, and Right keys.
Press and release the ON key.

Be aware that this will clear all RAM.

Display / LCD issue

Try adjusting the brightness setting for the LCD screen by holding down the "on" key and pressing the "+" key at the same time to make your screen darker or the "-" key at the same time to make it darker.

Display is so light that I can barely read it, I've replaced the batteries and no change

Have you attempted darkening the display on the calculator through the function keys? Push "2nd" and then push "up" a few times. After resetting the calculator, this setting will always revert to a lower, unreadable setting. I'm sure TI knows about this, but they probably arent too inclined to fix it.
