Question about GE Washing Machines

Chugging like noise during certain cycles

Hi
My GE washer is about 8 years old. it starts the cycle fine..agitates and then is seems that when if maybe shift gears? (sorry, know nothing about appliances) it seem to make a chugging like noise and then stops on its on but then continues on through the cycles and the noise happens again at the rinse cycle..is spins etc fine?
Any guidance you can give would be appreciated :) I can get my machine to start a cycle, it drains out the water but then makes a banging sound (does this even if no clothes are in the washer) when it starts to spin. If I change the knob to Spin Cycle and play with the speed knob, I can get it to spin. It's and 8 year old GE model # WCSE3100A1WW

Could this be a bearing issue, or more of a clutch issue?

definitely not a clutch issue because a bad clutch or issue with it will not allow it to go into full spin!!!

Hi!!
The "Metallic banging/clicking" sound you hear is the Shifter mechanism engaging or disengaging.
The drive system will engage at the start of the Agitate Cycle and disengage when the Agitate Cycle is complete. This occurs multiple times during the wash. GE claims this is a normal sound and should not be concerned about it. Check page 10 of your Operating Manual, if you do not have a manual, click on this link to download one http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-90323.PDF

Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

The inside of your agitator became worn, and possible strip out the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. The loud noise mustly occurs during the spin cycle. If you hear this loud noise your load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it.

Thumping/knocking/rattles during wash agitation cycle

Mine is doing the same thing. I opened it up to see what was happening and it was the drive belt tension arm bumping around. Soon, the belt started slipping during the spin cycle. Now it won't spin and the belt starts to smolder from the friction of the drive motor. If you haven't checked your belt, that's a good place to start.

Squeaking Top Load GE Washer

I bought a new GE Washer GTWN5050MWS yesterday. From the first load it squeaked each time the tub moved back and forth (no agitator in the infusion type) It is a quick squeak and kind of resembles a cat getting it's tail under a moving rocking chair. I checked the entire owners manual and it describes several noises and not one of them describes what my new washer is doing. It does not make this sound except for when it is in the wash cycle. Spinning is quiet, and during the agitation of the rinse cycle it is a much more subdued squeak. But during the wash cycle it is not acceptable.

I called GE this morning and they told me it was normal operation for all infuser types of their washer to make this noise. Tomorrow I will be taking it back for a full refund.

We purchased this machine because our 2-year old front loading GE washer broke down (discharge pump I think) and to get it fixed usually takes a couple of weeks. We thought it might be better to have a 2nd washing machine instead of paying the laundry mat. It took a month to get the last one declared unfixable in 2008. Maybe I was wrong. But this is very bad luck to have a brand new washing machine squeak so loud out of the box.

Noise during spin cycles

GE WPXH214ACC Washer drum makes loud noise when spinning sometimes. We've had it since 2005 & never had this happen before. Washer is level, must stop & redistribute clothes to correct. Just started happening now.
