Question about Rheem 40 Gallon FVR NATGAS Low WATER HEATER 6YR 22V40SF

Intermittent pilot and burner

The pilot light will light, the burner will light and shortly after the whole unit will shut down, have tried thermocouple replacement and cleaning the pilot light assembly. also put the old thermocouple back with no noticeable change in performance.at a loss for what else to try replacing a gas valve is costly and possibly the wrong thing to do, tired of fighting this beast.

I have the same problem with the pilot light not staying on.  I replaced the thermocouple and the problem was the same.  I replaced the thermostat/gas control valve and it has two(2) wires that are supposed to connect to a thermal switch.  This unit does not have a thermal switch or any connections for these two wires.  The old thermostat/gas control valve had two wires that fit into a slot below the thermocouple.  The instructions say to reconnect the thermal switch wires but there is no thermal switch or connectors.  Am I missing something?  How do I get around this issue?

Sounds like ur gas valve solanoide is done . depending on what type and age it is , it will have either manual or electronic ignition . one last shot wourth trying iis the jet may be slightly blocked, remove it and blow it out with a compressed air line do not try cleaning it with a wire or similar. put it back together and try firing it up. good luck .ps what part of the world do u live because these arent a common house hold appliance in ireland they are only used in commerical building,s over here.

My water heater pilot light won't stay lit

I would try cleaning the thermo couple surfaces with some steel wool... Both where the flame contacts the sensor, and the electrical contacts. Even a small increase in voltage may be enough to hold the pilot valve open. Both black, and white soot on the sensor end, can act as an temperature insulator, lowering the output voltage.

I have a 40 galon GE Smart shield water heater, Model: SH40T12AVH00, Serial # GELN0805V13908. The pilot light is lit but the burner will not stay on for more than 2 secods and then shuts-off.

I believe this unit does not have a standing pilot light and lights each time? Have you reinstalled all doors back into the heater? It sounds like the main burner is blowing the pilot off the thermocouple. You might try replacing the thermocouple. I have the same problem with the same model. The problem has been identified by a friend of mine, correctly, I think.
This is a very dangerous problem involving Bosch's much touted safety feature, ironically enough. IT IS THE FLAME SENSOR IN THE GAS VALVE. The flame sensor is supposed to confirm that the pilot has lighted BEFORE the main gas line sends gas to the main burners, after which the pilot shuts off. The pilot light is not coming on, the sensor that shouldn't let gas fto the main burners is failing and the main gas is flowing and ignighting from the spark that is supposed to light only the pilot in a big explosion.
This is the 2nd unit of this model that has failed. I think Bosch should do a recall

it's the thermocoupler ( about $20 ) that is bad replace it. if that doesnt do it it is the box with the on/off/ pilot button ( about $175 ) I found a complete unit at www.americanrvcompany.com for $275 plus shipping ($300 total) and that is how i fixed the exact problem with mine.

Cant get my waterheater lighter to reignite

Sounds like the gas valve has failed. The gas valve can be replaced. It will unscrew out of the tank. Shut the water supply to the tank off and get the new gas ready to screw in. Take out the old and screw in the new, you will onlt lose about a cup or two of water if you are quick enough. Otherwise drain the tank down if you must. If you are going to replace the gas valve I would also replace the thermocoupler.

Water heater pilot light

it also sounds as though the pilot injector could be blocked so when the boiler comes on it extinguishes the pilot & then when the burner goes off boiler shuts down, or also the pilot rate maynot be set right, so when the main burner kicks in it robs the pilot of the gas it requires.
It could be that, or there is lack of ventilation for the boiler, so you get flame lift off when the boiler fires?

Pilot lights (not always) but gas will not flow into burner

First Clean the ignitor assembly and make sure the flame is reaching the flame sensor strongly.

You may need to replace the flame sensor.
