I have a Sony KP-51WS500. To pull up the adjustment mode, turn off you tv then on the remote press Display,"5" button, "+" on the volume, and the power with in a second. Your TV should come on with GReen letters. After that press 1 and 4, 2 and 5 to change menus. Go to PJE (or something like that) and you should see PJE GREEN CENT, SKEW, SIZE etc. Press 3 to change colors, 6 to bring up the cross hatch and 9 to bring up fine tunning. Line each color up with the white boxes with the menu nipple thing. Press mute to write your changes then switch the TV on and off. Good luck.

here is the Service Manual For all WS500 Models:
    http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ws500/

    It's in the "Files" Section

After converging in full mode (480), save the data to all modes. I think
it's ACPL with a value of 1 and then mute + enter (in the PJE menu)

    Brian,

Thought you might like this, it's the Sony procedure for replacing the
CRT's. Additionally there are some resistors that MAY have to be
soldered in first, depends on what resistors are already installed.

    1. Replace the green CRT first. It is the reference color. If the set
had reasonably good convergence and geometry, it will be aligned to the
existing red and blue. Make sure the unit is in "FULL" mode.

    2. Enter the service mode and scroll to the PJE category. Press "7" and
"ENTER" on the remote controller. This will zero out the convergence
correction data. The idea is to remove any centering and skew
correction. The deflection yoke can now be rotated to match the X and Y
tilt to the red/blue lines. The centering magnets can also be adjusted
to bring the green in line with the remaining colors. This is very
important. Excessive centering correction by the convergence circuits
can result in over-heating of the convergence drive ICs. Press "0" and
"ENTER" when these adjustments are complete to return to the original
    convergence data.

    3. Adjust CRT cutoff (G2).

    4. Adjust the 2-pole and 4-pole magnet rings as per the service manual instructions.

    5. Adjust static focus

    6. Converge the green lines with the red and blue.

    7. Save the data and flash focus in the full mode only.

    8. Install the red and blue tubes and perform the adjustments made for the green tube mentioned above.

    9. Any time an adjustment produces good results, save the data.

    10. Once convergence is complete, save the data and flash focus.

    11. Press the "DISPLAY" button on the remote and "All COPY" will appear
on the screen. Press "ENTER" to copy the data to the other modes. The
wide-zoom mode will need to be touched up. The horizontal size and
linearity will be slightly off. HSIZ data in the global adjustments can
be changed to the same data value as the other modes, but it is
recommended to adjust the wide-zoom mis-convergence in the PJE mode..
When wide-zoom is properly adjusted, save the data but do not flash
focus again. Flash focus is only done in the FULL mode.

    12. Keep the unit in the FULL or WIDE-ZOOM mode for the first 30 days to promote even, initial, phosphor aging.

  • Nate Stansfield
    Nate Stansfield Apr 24, 2009

Did you also save the changes to the flash focus memory? Do the normal save and hit FF
Before returning to the service mode, press the "MUTING" + "ENTER" buttons on the remote commander to write the data

To save a new FF setting while in the SM, you can only do it in 480i "full" mode NOT 1080i "full" mode!!

Sony Convergence Procedure
Document version 1.1
( I Will update as needed and if errors are found, please let me know and I will issue an update)
Changing values in the service mode can cause your tv to malfunction, this text will only explain how to adjust the factory convergence. Before changing any other values make sure you know what you are doing.
To Enter Service mode With the tv off and the remote in tv mode, press the following keys:[DISPLAY],[5],[VOL UP(+)],[POWER]
The tv will now display "3D-COMB" in the upper left hand corner.
Press the [2] or [5] keys to move up or down through the adjustment categories until you see "PJE" in the upper left hand corner(note that the letters will change to a different font).
Next press the [6] key twice, this will bring up a grid (crosshatch) without video behind it. When I refer to the [CENTER] key, It is located in the middle of the directional arrow keys on the remote.
When cursor is white, you can move it to an adjustment point using the arrow keys. Once you press the [CENTER] button, the cursor will lock to that adjustment point. It will now change to one of three colors ; Red, Green, or Blue. The color of the cursor will be the color you are adjusting. To change the color press the [3] key only when the cursor is locked to an adjustment point, pressing the [3] key when you are in navigation mode will have no effect. By Pressing the [CENTER] button again will switch you back to navigation mode.
To save your changes press the [MUTING] then [ENTER] keys on the remote.
Important notes
Not all Sony's will function in the exact same way that I outlined above. Below I have made notes of the differences.

  1. Some Models will only let you move in a spiral pattern out from the center.
  2. Your tv may or may not have different convergence modes that you will have to adjust, if your tv is a hi-def you will need to converge the hi-def mode as well, With the cross hatch up you can press the [DISPLAY MODE] key to switch between the different modes. Make sure you save your changes before changing picture mode or your changes will be lost.
  3. GA_googleFillSlot("TL-IMU-Article"); style="font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'"> On tv's that have different screen modes, you can try to copy the settings from the full mode once you have saved the setting by pressing [MUTING] then [ENTER] . To do this select the "ALCP" mode then change the data to "01" then press [MUTING] then [ENTER] again. the data from the full mode is then copied to all other modes. This procedure works for the "RA6" chassis, this procedure may be different in different models
More Information
  1. Save changes often.
  2. The green crt is used to align the other two colors. If you need to get the grid straight, straighten up the green completely before adjusting the other colors. An overlay may be needed if the green is way off.
  3. After adjusting a point, you may throw another point out of convergence, Check for this.
  4. Start converging in the center and go out, don't start on the outside you will be fighting the convergence if you do.
  5. Avoid the tendency to adjust the worst point first, most likely one of the other smaller adjustments will get that badly converged point very close to where it needs to be. By adjusting that badly converged point first, you can throw off a well converged point somewhere else.
  6. If you are at the edge of the screen adjusting a point there, look at the opposite edge of the screen, you can throw a point off on the other side if you over adjust.

Hi,
I can help you to align Green Convergence in Sony KP-51WS500 TV

If you have changed Only Green CRT and did not touched/ altered other two (red and blue) CRTs then adjust ONLY green convergence data in service mode. DO NOT change RED and BLUE data as its already OK.

Click HERE to download Service Manual of KP-51WS500 copy, please download all eleven files and use WinRaR software to unzip so you will get service manual PDF file that has details how to enter in service code and how to adjust convergence.

Please be advised that Do Not adjust red and blue convergence if CRTs are on same old position.

And if you remounted/ readjusted all 3 CRTs then you need to perform complete convergence adjustment and sequence is Green horizontal then vertical, Red horizontal then vertical and Blue horizontal and vertical adjustment.

Hit "add a comment" button for further query / info.
Thanks.

There are two or three convergence modules in the TV that have to be replaced. They solder to the circuit board. You can get these parts at shopjimmy's web site if you feel you can fix it yourself. Otherwise prepare to spend $400 plus parts to have a shop do it.

That sounds like a Convergence IC issue. Have you tried the auto focus? If so does that stop short? If so its most likely the convergence. Your model uses the Sony Type 1 convergence repair kit available from www.tvrepairworld.com the kit also contains the step by step instructions on cd along wth the ICs and pico fuses.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
