1999 Fatboy backfiring & no spark

I recently purchased this bike was running great. started running rough so I replaced the plugs with original equipment. The plugs keep building up with black soot and backfiring won't turn over, we check for spark and their is minimum spark if any, any help would be appreciated..suggestion was a bad coil..

New fuel and battery is fully charged.

The guy with the same problem..Your leaving your enrichner (choke) out thats where the 2000rpm and soot comes from...Original fellow I think you may have an intake leak around your manifold or carb.

Motorcycle Question about a 1999 Suzuki Marauder VZ800 running rough after it is running a while.

Question edited for clarity and typos.

I had a similar issue on a Kawasaki Z1300. It was caused by a fuel line that was routed very close to the rear of the cylinders. When the engine heated up it caused a vapor lock, so basically a gap in the fuel delivery. Backfires can also be caused by weak fuel delivery.

Wont start, kick starter is stuck

You have either broken something internally in the gear box or the motor is seized. A quick way to find out is to pull your spark plug and attempt kick starting it without the plug in. There should be no problem turning the engine over easily. You can put it in gear and attempt pushing the bike to see if the engine turns that way. More than likely your kick start has broken something inside, whether it be a spring or bearing, something has locked down to not allow it to rotate.

Bike runs great. until it warms up then it backfires and spits and sputters

It sounds like a fuel problem. Next time it starts doing this, take the air filter cover and the air filter off. Leave the air filter backing plate on the engine and go for a ride. If it runs better, the carb is too rich. If it runs worse, the carb is too lean. They are usually jetted very lean from the factory to meet EPA standards.

If the bike is fuel injected, the dealer will have to change that as it's not owner servicable.

If you run it too long with the enricher on when it's cold, it will foul the spark plugs. The enricher is way rich. I usually only run the enricher long enough to get the warm enough to run while holding the throttle open or using the throttle lock. Don't run the enricher any longer than necessary. Put in a new set of plugs that try that. Big Twins are bad about the enricher fouling the plugs, Sportsters are the king of fouled plugs when using the enricher. When you purchase spark plugs, just buy the Autolite 4164 plugs. They run as well as anything out there and don't cost nearly as much.

Good Luck

2000 honda 1100 shadow spirit. Rough idle, little power.

Replace the spark plug caps and try again. On Honda's the cap is often part of the wire (a dealer part) NGK makes some inexpensive plug caps about $5 each. They should OHM out to 5000 anything above or below and you need to replace them. This should fix the problem.

I have a 1997 1200s it iS sputtering in the intake like backfireing, the spark plugs are clean no iol foul or wetness present. any suggestions please..

Had your bike sat a long time without being started? Been down real bumpy roads? I worked on a friends 1999 883 Sporty recently, it needed the carb rebuilt. I cleaned out all jets and passages, and float level was reset, it was out of adj.. Also, when diagnosing bike hard starting and backfiring out the air cleaner problem, I found the timing plate had losened up and the timing was off about 7 degrees which I adjusted back to spec before I rebuilt the carb. The plugs were also clean, not dry..Runs Good Now. The shop 1st looked at bike before I did, they said it was an Ignition problem and changed out the key switch which did Not solve problem.
