DVD combo drive not working

My problem is twofold. I have a Dell 2400 and the DVD drive is not working. device manager says it is working properly nut when I insert a DVD I get "need to insert a disk" dialog box. Therefor I decided to replace the drive with a perfectly good lite-on combo drive a friend had spare. Replaced the drive and my Dell now would not recognose either the CD or the DVD combo drives. Put the old dysfunstional drive back in, still not working but Dell recognizes the drives again. I guess the DVD is the master and when replaced does not allow for recognition of the slave(CD). What are my options?

My drive wont read anything. I am trying to install MS office from a DVD. my device manager says it's working properly and I tried the Microsoft Fixit and that didn't work

Device Manager states that it is working properly because it is detected by the computer. However, device manager has no capability of check if there's a problem with the lense of the DVD Drive. You can try a diffent CD to check if the problem is with the MS office CD or with the drive. If the DVD Drive still cant read any other disk it only means that it has a bad lense and you need to replace the DVD Drive.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a dell vostro 1510 laptop and when I put a DVD or a CD in it,it does not read them at all. help me please!

First thing to do is go onto the start menu, and right click on computer, click on properties and look for the hardware tab. Click on device manager and look for DVD/CD rom drives. Click the plus sign next to that selection and see if you DVD drive is shown or if it has a question mark next to it.

If it is shown and you click on it, it will tell you if the device is working properly. If it is, then you may just need to obtain a DVD/CD cleaning disk. The lenses do get dirty, similar to a audio CD player, and need to be cleaned to read properly.

The only other thing you can do is make sure the device is seated properly into the laptop, but they are secured with a screw on the bottom of the laptop, so that does not often happen.

If the device is not working properly, right click on it and choose uninstall. Restart your computer and the device will be seen as new hardware and a driver installed by windows. If you need an updated driver, go to, choose support and put your service tag in to get all available drivers for your laptop.

Try these suggestions and see if that solves your problem.

If this solution was helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback for me.

Thank You,

Was burning DVD to HD and when finished, it wouln't eject DVD NO lights now and after reboot, says that the device is not there

control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

Hello jpptalbot.
You can install the CDRW on a free IDE channel (which is not being used by any devices) and there is no need of using a jumper in this case.
