Heat does not work in oven, repairman says its the circuit board. Can this be fixed/replaced by the homeowner?

Electric burners, clock, and timer work. Oven does not. While in use a loud popping was heard and the heating ceased. Repairman said the circuit board needs replacement which was estimated at near $375.00. Is that repair somethig that the homeowner could do with directions and the part?

Your ERC(circuit board) through Sears is about $125.00. You can replace it yourself.

I have a Kenmore 790.96224 electric range and the burners and oven do not work, but the clock is working. how do i fix?

Try replacing ONE stovetop burner and see if the new one works. If it does, replace more stovetop burners. If the new ones all work, replace the oven burners.

If that first replacement stovetop burner STILL doesn't work, don't replace any more. Instead, check (or have checked) the circuit breaker for the range. It may get power from a second source to power the clock.

Hello there:
Please read the entire solution i have provided it doe4s cover things that you have said has already been checked but there is more to it
It won't bake or broil If neither the oven nor the broiler heats, but the range burners still work, the clock may be set for a timed or self-cleaning cycle. Check to be sure the clock buttons and knobs are set properly. If your clock has a knob that says "push for man(ual)," push the knob in and try heating the oven and broiler again. If they still don't work properly, you probably have a defect in the thermostat, selector switch, or common wiring. Note... If the oven doesn't have a separate bake/broil/etc. selector switch, the problem is often with the thermostat. It's not easy to check the selector switch or thermostat for proper operation. If you suspect a problem with either of these, call a qualified appliance repair technician. The clock stopped The non-electronic clocks on gas range/ovens often don't last long. That's a problem, because the clock is essential to the self-cleaning and timed-bake features. Clocks are rarely repairable--you usually just have to replace them. Electronic clocks have been more reliable. But, they're often integrated with several other features of the range/oven. So when the clock develops a defect, it often renders the entire oven and broiler inoperative. The electronic clock is usually integrated with a circuit board, and the touchpad that holds the buttons you press is often a separate component. If your electronic clock is defective, you may need to replace the touchpad, circuit board, or both. Although these may be expensive, they aren't usually very complicated to replace.

Unfortunately this usually means the Clock/Timer assembly needs to replaced. The Clock/Timer controls all the features of the oven, while the surface burners are controlled by each individual infinite switch on the control panel. Thats why your surface burners will still work, but the oven does not. That fact that there is no display also is a symptom the board is defective. They boards do not have a fuse and are not servicebale. It needs to be replaced. This is not a difficult repair and can easily be repalced by the average do-it-yoursefler. The following link epxlains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3727366-replacing_control_kitchen_range

The part number for a replacement circuit board is 316207522. The overlay (the plastic preprinted template that is applied to the board) is sold separately (part number 316220804). If the current overlay is still in good shape, it can be peeled off and reused.

You can purchase replacement parts at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing. So, shop and compare.

NOTE: The Sears website sells a refurbished version of the control board for much less than the other sites. The part number is 316207502R.

If you have any questions about this repair, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Apartment size brentwood electric range. The oven, 2 timers to the right of the clock and the outlet on front left have stopped working. Clock works, all top burners work.

Some of these ranges have two plugs, one for 240 volts for the burners themselves, one for the controls. Other issue, could have one leg of the 240 volt circuit not working, might get some heat, but not full power. Check fuses, just to be sure. In any event, you likely have two circuits: 240 volts for the power required to take care of the heat, and 120 volts for controls, timers, clocks. If only one plug, I'd expect to find a blown fuse within the appliance, or some other problem in the 120 volt circuit.

Not sure of your level of expertise to open up and trouble shoot electrical. Need to understand (1) how to kill power and (2) how to safely test a live circuit (at 240 volts.) Make sure meter is always set to 250 or greater volts, AC.

My clock and temperature display is dim

Hi, this will happen over a period of time and its just heat related. the control panel isn't insulated properly and , there has been a larger than normal transfer of heat to the inside of the control panel where the circuits are housed.

If this is a problem, i recommend replacing the control board. it will fix the dim issue.

Loud pop means electrical fault occured. There may be and internal fuse in the oven that blew. Probably blown oven element but certainly open circuit to timer. Remove back, check for supply to oven timer. If supply is there, the timer can be bypassed to allow for oven element to work as clock replacements are very expensive.

You need to check the connection at the back of the unit that hooks to the house power. Turn off breakers or pull fuses before checking. It sounds like you only have half of the voltage you need. One of the wire connectors may be burnt or you may have a problem with the house wiring.

hoops, it almost sounds like you lost a leg of power, L2. L1 is sending power to the board but but it's not making the loop. Too much of a coencidence that the burners and oven are not working. Check the cord connection to the oven. You should have 220V across the 2 outer terminals. 120V from each end to center terminal. Let me know what you find. Catriver.
