Gets hot and runs very rough when idling as if its about to stall, cools down as I drive.

Check that the cooling fan is working of if you have a viscous fan hub check that it is operational. Electric fans should be working at around 80 degrees C and just because the viscous fan is spinning doesn't mean that it is driving to pass enough air through the radiator. The statement "it cools down when I drive" is a clear indicator that there is no air passing through the radiator at idle and by driving- the air is being forced through the radiator so it is cooling down

Overheating

if it cools down at idle this suggests the cooling fan is working...check temperature of upper and lower radiator hoses if one is hot while the other is cold suspect thermostat...if they are equal...remove radiator cap while engine is COLD and start vehicle check to see if as the car warms up the coolant in the radiator is swirling or circulating...if not suspect waterpump

How a cooling fan should work

The cooling fan is thermostatically controlled and enerised once the radiator/engine temperature exceeds that of the thermostat controlling th the fan. If the fan is coming on prior to the engine reching the operational temperature, then either the thermostat is not functioning or ha been wired incorrectly into the system the radiator was changed.`

more likely to be a thermostat/fan temp sensor or fan problem.(dont you just love armchair mechanics, any decent tech would start with the cheapest/obvious solution and work up).

Our 2000 Camry 4 cylinder just overheated, all fluids seem to be fine what else could it be?

Could be a bad thermostat if it stays closed it will overheat quickly.A bad cooling fan will overheat the car at idle but not while driving.A bad radiator act the same as the thermostat may be better at higher speeds.A water pump will usually make noise.Bug parts or debris clogging the radiator will be self evident.Air in the cooling system will usually make the overheat come and go. A bad coolant sensor can tell you the car has overheated when it actually has not. Just some things to look at.

1991 toyota camry. It has a new radiator and cap,

the a/c when running creates a lot of extra heat and needs second fan, if second fan is not working right this will cause overheating, if fan is creating a load noise it is likely bearing is bad and will not spin as fast as it should not cooling. also check that fan it not hitting anything if you describe loud noise i can give better idea

TOW FANS AGAINST THE RADIATOR, TOYOTA CAMRY 2001 4 CYL

yes, they are both radiator fan. dependent on the temperture of the outside air and the cooling temperure on control panel. the fan will kick on when the temperture cross over the preset- set on the computer. so, either fan on, no fan, fan is runing when the car is runing or not, is not a porblem.
the porblem occures when the fan stops, and the temperture is over 100 degree outside.

COOLING FAN DOESN'T MOVE

Your fan motor is broken. Take it to a mechanic.  Run the heater on full blast at its hottest setting to help keep the radiator cool while driving to the mechanics. Open a window if u need to!
