Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hard drive says it is a n IBM Deskstar, the outside of the tower says Netvista, where do i look and to find out what is really in this thing and where can I download for free a user guide /manual.

I was recently given a computer by my boss. IBM Netvista M42 P4 2.5 Ghz Tower Computer I know that lenovo supports Net Vista and supposedly Hitachi supports deskstar. The hard drive casing says IBM Deskstar The out side of the tower says net vista. Long story short how can I tell what exactly is this thing because theyremoved the harddrive and I will be hooking it up tonight when i bring it home. It would be nice to bring home a print out of the OEM setup, bios and what have you so that if I have any problems with it I can refer to the written stuff.... my present 98Se is in bad shape and finding things on the internet is difficult with it's performance being so raggedy, i want to print out this stuff before I go home. I was told that the fan is shot. I have 2 so that isn't a big deal but if the fan doesn't work...that will keep it from booting up???? never heard that one before. Yes i am a real greenhorn but I am a quick study and know more after working this job so lay it on me .. i will catch up

I like the attitude! Let's start with the basics and move on from there.
This is so I understand everything, too. Which fan is shot, the one on the CPU or the one in the power supply? If it is the CPU fan, you should replace that before using the PC much. You can fry the CPU without antiquate cooling. If you take the heat sink off of the CPU, be sure to put a dilectric gel between the heat sink and the CPU. If it is the fan in the power supply, replace that unit when you can.

Next is the hard drive. If it is an IDE drive it will have one wide ribbon cable and one four-wire power connector. The wide ribbon cable will have a red stripe down one side. Connect the cable so the red stripe is next to the power connection. The power plug is indexed so it will only attach one way.

Here is a link to cnet.com that will give you the specs on the computer. There is a second link to get to complete specs, if you need them. http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/ibm-net...

It's about time for me to go home for the day. I will be online later. I hope this helps you. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

You can get the system snapshot. you can use any external tool like pc wizard 2008 to get a complete configuration of your system.

if you donot want to use any external tool then there is an option in windows also.

just go to start->run-> msinfo32.exe

from this tool also you can get the system configuration completely at very high level.

Install my system audio driver

The same model Netvista can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your Netvista, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver. When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive. Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true

I have an ibm tower when I go to install the hard drive says to press f7 during txt to disable the driver not sure what that means or how to do it

Pressing F7 will access the system setup. In the main menu you will see the drives in the the system. The BIOS should be able to auto-detect all the installed drives in the tower. Once the system successfully sees the disk you save changes and exit.

My hard drive is failing on an IBM NetVista 8305. Is there a specific hard drive that needs to be put in to replace the failed one, and where would I find that drive? I've run into compatibility issues...

I've had a quick look a a photo of your motherboard and it looks like it supports both SATA and PATA IDE devices.

Have a look inside the tower, if you current HDD is connected via a fairly broad grey ribbon cable, its using a PATA IDE interface - the older fashioned one.

If its connected with a fairly narrow flat red coloured cable, then its a SATA interface.

Remember to set the jumper settings on your new drive to match those on your old one.

Ibm deskstar model dtla-307015 invalid system

For some reason, the computer isn't able to read the hard drive and Windows isn't being found. If this computer has a floppy disk drive, make sure there's no disk in it. (Some people still use floppies, and the normal setting for systems with floppy drives is to try booting from that drive first. You may have a disk in it that isn't bootable.) Other possible causes are hard drive failure, a virus or other malware program has damaged the drives boot sector, or a motherboard problem. The most likely cause would be the hard drive; as a mechanical device they are more prone to fail than other parts.

IBM deskstar 120 GXP 40GB will only format to 22GB. Its an old drive setup in an external usb enclosure

sounds like you're trying to format with FAT 16 or 32 which limits the partition size.
Try formatting with NFS which has no limit on partition sizes
