Re: RIO Carbon

Here's a guide for you - sorry but i don't have any photos. If you look in the tips and tricks section for this product then I have previously posted a number of things that may help some of you. If not then send me a request and I will try to sort your problem out.

How to disassemble a Rio Carbon:

  • First take off the front plate (you may want to warm it up, not fry it, with a hairdryer to make the removal easier.
  • Then you will see near the bottom there are two holes which if you get a very small screwdriver then you can unclip 2 of the clips holding the back plate on.
  • Then pry your screwdriver between the back of your rio and the rubber and lever the back off slightly (you may want to get a cocktail stick/match stick etc. to keep this open) then on each side you should see two more metal clips holding the back plate on. Lever each of these clips and the back plate should pop off - don't force it or you might break the plastic.
  • Then you will be able to see the hard drive and the battery below it.
How to remove the hard drive:

  • Make sure your player is turned off and not plugged in.
  • Then carefully lift the drive out of its cradle/holder. It will be attached by a ribbon cable to the main circuit board.
  • At the bottom of the hard drive carefully lever the connector off the drive, make sure you do it evenly so as not to bend the pins if you want to be able to use it afterwards.
  • You will then be have a 5GB Microdrive and a Rio carbon shell.
  • You can then connect up your CF card or new Microdrive.
  • If connecting a compact flash card then you may want to put a bit of foam on top of it to stop it rattling in the case because it is slightly thinner than a Microdrive
Hope this helps you not to break your Rio even more when trying to fix it!

Re: RIO Carbon

Most MP3 players are "snap-together" cases. BUT look for screws under covers or decals first....

More Rio Trouble >.<

I presume that your computer does not pick it up at all.

Try taking out the hard drive carefully and putting it in a usb card reader. Then if it picks up, format it, put it back in your carbon. Your pc should then pick it up and then reformat it (may be needed) and reload the firmware (from:

If it doesn't pick up then your hard drive will be bust :(

for less than a 10er you can buy a 1GB CF card and replace it with that (see my post:

Hope this sheds a bit of light on your problem

How to take music off Rio Carbon

I have bad news - I was completely unsuccessful in dragging tracks from the rio to my computer. You can load songs, but you can't "unload" them with the Rio Carbon.

Just in case your computer has capabilities that mine does not, try this:
Double-click "My Computer" on your PC desktop
Double click the Rio Carbon icon
Double click the "Music" folder
Try dragging a single music file from the "Music" folder window to your PC desktop - it will either work, or it will say that it cannot copy the file to the specified location.

Good luck!

Opening the Rio Carbon to replace the volume button

The easiest and least damaging way to open the Rio Carbon is to start at the bottom of the player and pry it open a little until you can see the tabs. You have to push those to release them. Work you way around clockwise and there are tab a little further into the player, you have to pull the bottom of those out to release them. I did it last night and was able to repair the volume wheel and get the player back together and it works.

Here is where to get the software for your Rio:

Rio went out of the Mp3 business before vista came around, so you may need to get in touch with Microsoft to find out if Rio can be made compat with Vista.

Rio Carbon Repair

I think you should keep looking for another solution, but what i know is that for out of warranty carbon players you can't get it fixed through rio/sonic blue, they will only replace it for a new one/remanufactured one for 99$. Here's a link to a previous post of someone who had the same problem as you: Good luck

Rio Pearl dropped.

Hi, I found the following info on the Rio site, hope it helps you. They qoute a fixed rate of 99$, i'm not sure it's worth it in your case... maybe you should find a repair person with good hands that can help with it. here's the info : "out-of-warranty returns can be replaced for a fixed cost to you. The out-of-warranty fee for your Rio Carbon player is $99. Please note, at this time we do not REPAIR defective or broken units; we will REPLACE them. You can purchase a replacement unit at For units that are in warranty, this process is known as a ?Swap-Ship? because when the defective unit is returned to Rio by you we swap it for a replacement unit (send a replacement to you). If you are interested in participating in the out-of-warranty program, please reply or contact Rio Audio Customer Support at (254) 299-2759 and we will issue a Return Merchandize Authorization (RMA) letter to you with further instructions. We will need the following information to complete the RMA: · Your complete name: · Your complete shipping address: · Your telephone number: · Your email address: · Model of Rio: · Serial Number of Player: · Part number of player: · Date of Purchase: · Place of Purchase: · Operating System: · Transfer software you are using: · Description of issue and what you?ve already tried: " Good luck!
