My p-7901U FX made a popping sound, turned off completely (crashed) and now won't turn on. After unplugging everything from the laptop and wall sockets, I plugged the power adapter into the wall

It looks like you had a component burn out somewhere. Save dismantling it and checking for component failures try contacting the Gateway support site:-

No Power battery went dead I plug it in and still no power and it will not charge battery ether??

Your power inverter most likely has died or the connection between the inverter and the wall outlet cable has come loose. Most computer retailers sell universal power adapters you can test this with.

Don't know exactly what is your problem, but I assume it is related to power issues. Please find below my recommendations:

First of all, you need to make sure your power adapter is providing enough power to both run the laptop & charge the battery. A very good way to do this is to compare your laptop voltage & ampere requirements (written on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) with the voltage & ampere ratings of the power adapter. Voltages should be the same, or the power adapter's voltage about up to 0.5 volts more than the laptop's voltage rating. Amperage of the power adapter should be at least equal to or greater than the laptop's rating. It should never be less than the laptop's rating, or else the power adapter will be providing insufficient amperes to charge the battery. Of course, the power adapter's nominal amperage might be ok, but it degraded on usage. You can verify this by testing using a good or new power adapter.
If the battery did not charge using the new power adapter, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.
If this still did not resolve the problem, then the battery itself could be bad. Try it on another laptop, or try a good or new battery in your laptop.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether.

No output voltage to input of inverter therefore no backlite wich chip damage...?notebook is acer aspire 5610z.

There could be a problem with the battery. A fast check to determine whether you have a problem with the power adapter, power cord or the laptop's battery is to turn off the laptop, remove the battery, connect the power adapter, turn on the laptop & see if it works.
If the laptop works directly from the power adapter with the battery removed, then the power adapter is good. In this case we can suspect that the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.

If this did not work, try also disassembling the laptop & make sure that all main components are seated properly. Also make sure that all ribbon cables interconnecting the various components of the laptop are tightly connected.

Gateway Laptop

This sounds like a loose or broken jack. Check the jack on the machine, use a small screw driver, and see if it has any play. This could potentially cause serious damage to the machine, if it hasn't already. If the jack is loose or broken, then you will need to have it replaced. If you cannot tell whether is loose/broken, then I suggest that you take it in for a professional diagnosis, they will be able to tell you if the jack is broken, if it has done more serious damage, and where the problem area is exactly. By the sounds of it, I'm going to say that some damage has already been done, let's just hope it's not too serious.

My gateway laptop won't come on

for a no power issue there are three major component that can cause it: defective memory, defective motherboard, defective processor.
components that could affect the computer in booting: external devices: remove all
hard drive and optical drive: remove it too
if there are any pci card or any card installed in computer remove it. after removing all component and only the motherboard is left alone you should be getting some behavious which will indicate your computer is still alive: you will get to hear a beeping sound, a display error message that no memory is detected. if it doesnt turn on then the motherboard is dead
