Question about Dell Wireless 2350 Router

1 Answer

Can't get laptop to connect via wireless, works fine hard wired

Any computer I hardwire into my Dell 2350 works just fine. But, when I try to connect my laptop to the 2350 wirelessly, it usually (not always) gets stuck at the stage where it gets a network address. The Wireless Network Connection Status window says "This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer". And it says I have " or no connectivity" (I have none). Thanks for any help !

Are you using any encryption on the wireless side? If so, and you incorrectly type the password, that would happen. You may also want to try updating the firmware on that router. From what I was able to find, this appears to be the latest available: It's also possible that the wireless interface on that router is starting to go. Especially since you said the directly wired connections work fine. The wireless interface would be separate from the Ethernet, so it's possible for that to be dying out while the other is still ok. That does appear to be a slightly older model router, so if it came down to it you could think about replacing it for something newer.

Is this your first router or you are replacing an existing one with this? If you had a router setup before don't name the wireless network the exact same as your old one unless you go into your wireless properties on all your wireless machines and delete saved profiles.
What kind of security are you using on the wifi? wep, wpa wpa2? If you are using wpa2 and have not updated all your computers to the latest service packs for windows you can have some issues as well. Some routers don't work well with ps3's, try setting the router security to wep and make a ten digit password.
Also the Dell XPS M1530's are known for bad performing wireless cards. You may be able to obtain an updated bios firmware from Dell's website to help fix this though i'm sure it's not the cause of why you can't connect to this router.
See if this helps, if not respond and I will give some more tips.

My first thought would be to try different forms of encryption on your router. It's possible that your printer may not support the type of encryption you're trying to use which may be causing it to have trouble connecting. For example, if you're using WPA encryption, try switching to a WEP key instead. You can change all of these settings from your Wireless Router's configuration page.

shouldn't need the utility software to use your wireless. Windows has it's own wireless utility which works with any wireless device installed on your laptop. check the icons on your taskbar and right click the little computer screen with the radio waves and tell it to "view wireless devices" then follow the prompts.
