IBM Laptop, Can only see the screen with a flashlight ?

I have an IBM R51 Laptop that has a darkened screen. I can see it ok if I use a bright flash light. Is it possibly just a back light bulb ? And if so can I replace it myself ? I think it is a 14.1 screen ? Barry

Hi Barry.
You don't have to replace the screen as you can see a fain image on it.
It could be 1 of 3 things, 1st...... the plug that fits into the inverter has worked loose because of opening and closing the lid. 2nd and 3rd, it could be the inverter itself or the inverter coil which is defective.
If your machine is out of warranty and you fancy having a go at this yourself the inverter is located just under the screen behind the bezel (plastic which surrounds the screen) just unscrew the screen, remove the plastic and check the connection to the motherboard and screen.
The inverter looks like an elongated circuit board.

Good luck and please post back if you need anymore assistance.

The screen displays becomes dark/ dim if there is no back light.
There are two parts responsible for lighting the display. First is the CCFL (Cold Cathode Florescent Lamp), which is the back light and the second is the Inverter board, which provides high voltage to the CCFL. These parts are inside the LCD screen. Either of the parts may be faulty or in some rare cases both. If you can see a faint image and the laptop turns on normally, then it is definitely the back light issue.
Rest assure that your system is ok and you can check it by connecting you laptop with some external display, which would work fine.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

IBM Thinkpad R51, screen went dark. At the right screen angle, I can see some light from the windows and cursor, but very faint. At that light angle I can maneuver the mouse and click on windows, so all...

The problem
1 The LCD screen is out or
2 The invertor board behind the LCD screen is out or
3 The backlite is out

You have 2 options
1 To use an external monitor for the time or
2 get the laptop fixed by a tech shop

IBM R51 Backlight Problem..

check the model/part on the inverter. if you know you have a good one on the second laptop, remove it and try it in the non-working one. if the parts match which most of the time they do, then you are ok, it should only be two wires on the inverter, one coming from mobo, one coming from lcd. if that doesnt work you have blown a capacitor/resistor somewhere down the line. in that case it will have to be serviced and will run you anywhere from 80-130 if you find a place local or on ebay.

Good Luck!

A blank screen on ibm thinkpad R51

your wires connecting from your laptop hardware to your display is messed up and is only "re-connected" and "hot-wired" by your action of closing/opening the lid.... use your warranty... your problem is when your warranty is expired so be glad this happened when you still have warranty

It sounds as if you have the screen brightness setting turned way down for when its on the charger. You might be able to adjust this in the control panel under the battery/power options.

This indicates a possible memory problem. Reseat the RAM modules and boot up, if OK then the laptop is OK.
If not then :-
If you have two RAM modules, remove both and insert one and boot up, if it is OK then repeat with the other one - this will determine which memory module is faulty.

Laptop brightness

sometimes the power options on a notebook determines the brightness, but if you look to your keypad, there is normally keys that adjust the brightness along with the Fn(function button) But if you have damaged when dropping it, one of the backlights may have been broken within the screen.
