Question about IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221 PC Desktop

Intellistation Dreaded "ntldr not found"

2 IBM Intellistation Pro 6221-GE1

each one same problem.

After a boot, the dreaded "can't find NTLDR"

I tried an auto repair from the XP Pro install disk
reflash BIOs
then recovery console:
Copy ntldr and detntndr the disk

the disk seems to have all of my data and will show up on other computers. Although, they won't boot other computers either.
nothing seems to work. I ran said teh drive was already updated.

the only thing that seems to work is if I buy a new drive and format it and install XP on different computer then install the drive in IBM intellistation. This has happened more than once, and I suspect that it will happen again.

I'm not getting it...there has never been a net boot on either of these machines. It is random, i have even tried putting in a new drive and formatting it on the intellistation... the drive get corrupted and acn't be recovered. i think somewhere there is a piece of code that is writing boot block. If i format and install on an other machine everything is fine.

Can i disable the net boot stuff?

    Thanks again

You have the solution given the fact that the IBM netloader wants to be subordinant to a loaded OS on a different drive acting as server when used on a thin client like the Intellistation. Unless carried as a portion of the registry of an MS OS, XP or Vista will drop it unless registered with a NetUpdate as a standing part of the registry. But most sysops conduct updates without all clients active so that some will inevitably be dropped, which is why the best strategy is to conduct updates on Off Hours when all clients can be up without human interaction, impossible during the workday, unless you deactivate an entire set of nodes for the purpose.

Run a reregistry while the Intellistation is on and active but without an operator and your problem should disappear more permanently.

Unusual, since the Intellistations I have worked with usually require a server and netboot, but I have been tempted to set up an Intellistation with its own bootloader and then layed down until the feeling went away, given the crippled state of a thin client's having very little in the way of defensive geography to load firewalls, et al.

I do not recommend disabling the netboot on any Intellistation, and though I know how you feel, the device was designed as a thin client so as to disallow the setup of all kinds of stuff, like games, etc. that just make a sysop's day go way downhill.

The Intellistation was designed as a secure station to participate in the commerce of Enterprise shared software and even SAAS market so as to not allow a user to bring his own.

Suggest that you simply use it in conjunction, as I thought you were, with a fully configured Network server.

Least cost alternative to expensive Network software is Ubuntu Server on any other Desktop that you wish to use.

    Hope that helps.

It will run faster only if the applications are multi-threading capable. Nearly all older apps cannot take advantage of multi-threading, but some of the newest apps are starting to be coded to take advantage of multiple cores/threads. You may also have to update the OS for it to recognize the second core.

During the XP install, you will be given the chance to set up partitions on the drive. Blow them all out. Completely. Then recreate the partition and let XP install. I expect this will solve the nt loader issue. If, however, it does not, then use the recovery approach below to get the required loader files onto your boot partition.

  1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
  2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
  3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
  4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
  5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
  6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "d." This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy d:\i386\ c:\

  7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Mayeb you need to repair the OS - In which case you will need to have SCSI Controller XP OS floppy driver obtained from IBM website.

Start up the computer booting up from the CD ROM. Then when it comes to "install thrid party devices" - press 'S' and insert the floppy with the SCSI Coontroller on it and follow the on screen instructions.
