What you want is a USB hub.  That will allow you to connect more than two USB devices to your computer.  There are two types, USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.  USB 1.1 will work for most slow speed devices, USB 2.0 is better for cameras and hard disks that have the support.  You should confirm which version of USB your computer has, but you should be OK getting a USB 4-port hub, plugging that into your computer, then plugging your keyboard and mouse into the hub and using the other port for the new peripheral that you wish to install.  Old PCI cards are problematic because you need the correct drivers.  You also need to make sure you plug them into the proper PCI port.  It sounds like the device you got from e-bay might be bad, so you shouldn't continue to use it.  If you post the make / model of your computer we might be able to suggest a new PCI card that will work if you still want to add more ports to your computer.

FIC FR33E motherboard?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FIC-FR33E-L-MOTHERBOARD-CPU-LOT-10-/170633274365

Reference: Photo

To the far left side of the motherboard, is actually the Bottom of the motherboard, when installed in your computer case.

The two White long expansion slots you see, are PCI expansion slots.
If one is available, (Open), you can use a PCI USB adapter card.
This is but one example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4143850&CatId=511

Seem cheap? Nope. Good quality also. (You can also check the reviews)

Need guidance in installing?
1) Follow Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside the computer.

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open.

[Note* Always unplug the power to a computer AT the surge protector. NOT at the back of the computer. (Power Supply)
You can cause a power surge ]

2) TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again, upon your return.

3) Finding an open PCI slot look at the back of the computer. In the metal frame you will see slots going horizontally.
These are Expansion Slots.

You may have an add-on adapter card already installed, in one of the PCI slots.
The expansion slot cover for it is removed.

You should see expansion slot covers however, in the remaining expansion slots on the back of the computer metal framework.
Remove the one that corresponds with the PCI slot you wish to use.

Be aware that the PCI slot will not be directly in line, with the expansion slot.
When installing an add-on adapter card, you will see when the card is inserted in the PCI slot, the metal bracket on the add-on card, lines up with an adjacent expansion slot.

This will make more sense to you once you go to install the card.

[PCI USB adapter card is an add-on adapter card ]

Line the card up in the PCI slot. Note that there is a Locating Lug in the PCI slot, and a matching Locating Notch, on the PCI USB adapter card.

Also, at the same time line up the metal bracket of the PCI USB adapter card, with the metal framework of the computer case at the back.

Gently push the PCI USB adapter card down into the PCI slot.
Fasten the card's metal bracket to the computer's metal framework.

Post the computer manufacturer name, and model number, if you need guidance in opening the computer case. Post in a Comment.

I bought a PCI controller card for USB. Is there supposed to be directions included or is there any way I can figure out how to install this?

Almost all PCI USB adapters are plug and play...just turn off and unplug the computer, put it in a slot and reconnect the power and power up. The operating system will take care of the rest.
If you want help physically plugging the unit into the motherboard, I will need to know what kind of computer you have, make/model of the motherboard (if the computer is generic) and the make/model of card you bought.

I have one bad usb port

If you need multiple USB ports, go onto ebay and find a 3.3v PCI usb card. The large PCIX slots in the server are PCI compatible and will accept a 3.3v pci card. (It just doesnt fill the entire socket), or you will notice to the bottom of the mainboard there is ONE 5v pci slot, you can get a 5v PCI USB cotroller and stick it in there.

Either way, you have more USB sockets. As the mainboard ones are built in, if its broken, you either need to get a new mainboard (not cheap), or get a cheap PCI USB card.

(Note if using ESX, ESX 3.5 and below do not recognise USB ports anyway).

I have one myself and have done as mentioned.

Lost of sound card

When you say your sound card is lost. do you mean it doesent show up in device manager?

if it doesent show up in device manager, remove the sound card (taking all neccessary prcautions) then clean the contacts and try reinstalling it. if that still doesent work try a different PCI Slott.

I have an old hard drive tower. I bought a printer today and the UBS cable is not compatible. How can I get the right cable?

Check the back of the printer, is there a another connector or only the usb?

if the printer has only usb, you would need to buy a usb card for your old tower
You would need to look inside your tower and check if you have a white PCI slot available

heres what it will look like

And heres a USB - PCI card that will fit into the white slot giving you the USB connectors needed for the printer and everything else

Why won't my computer and the gps communicate

I had this problem and the solution was to get a PCI USB card for my computer. My computer's motherboard didn't properly use USB and the Garmin GPS could never talk to the computer.

You can get a PCI USB card cheaply at nearly any good computer / electronics store, or even on Ebay. Once installed, just plug the USB cable into the socket on the PCI card and try the GPS again.
