Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

Issue Installing 4th Drive Device (2 DVD Drives and 2 Harddrives)

I have a DVD Drive, DVD/CD-ROM Drive and a hard drive in my Dell 5150 DC8m system running Vista. I moved the drive cable over next to the other DVD controller port on the motherboard and installed a second hard drive and plugged it into where the DVD drive cable was originally plugged in. 2nd Hard Drive works great...however the DVD moved to the new controller port on the motherboard doesn't see the DVD...so I think that port may be reserved only for a floopy drive. I really don't need the DVD, but the question is, How many drives can you install in Dell Dimension 5150 DCM8...? If the answer is indeed four (or more) then did I plug into the right drive port on the motherboard, or is there one somewehre else? Do you happen to have access to a schematic of the motherboard? Any switches (software or hardware) I need to throw?

You cannot plug an IDE ribbon in the floppy slot (port). The total IDE drives you can install is four (4). But check your jumper configuration. The DVD & DVD/CD-ROM cannot have the same jumper configuration to share the same IDE slot. One has to be MASTER (MS) and the other SLAVE (SL). Or you may put both drives on CABLE SELECT (CS).

I was just given a Dell Dimension 3000 by my daughter, who said there was no problems with it. It has a CD-Rom drive and a DVD-RW drive. When I power it up and click on MyComputer, neither of these drives...

They probably can't load because they are loading at the same time and XP can't sort it out.
Remove the cable from the CD ROM and re boot but enter the BIOS and make sure it is no loonger there.
The nachine should load the DVD rom.
You can try adding the CD rom now, it may work but being XP it may grab the wrong driver again and hang up.
Download new drivers from Dell.com
Hope this helps.

Selected boot device is not available

I had the same issue with my dell dimension 2400. The issue I was having resulted in the connection to the drive was loose. Try taking off the side of the case, find the drives in question and reseating the plugins. My pc was quite a bit older though and i don't know if this will be your solution, but its worth a shot. You can even try installing a different cable and swapping to another power supply plug.

CD drive not found in XP

while booting up as soon as you see any writing in the top right hand corner, click F2 and enter setup
look for booting order, and make sure the cd rom is in the first place before boot from hard drive. save and exit and the reboot with the XP disk in the cd rom drive. Try a repair from disk or if you want to a total reinstall.
Another thing you might try is click on F8 on boot up and enter in Safe Mode, and see what is giving your the headache.

a. if the device is not listed chances are you didn't set up the jumper correcly when installing the device or the device may not be powered or there's an issue with the data cable connectd to the device and the motherboard, check your physical setup.

My computer will not read any of my disk or install

when you say disk did you mean hard disk? if you do... did you recenlty install a new hard disks?... if you did... did you check the jumper-master-slave configuration when installing the new hard disk?
only one hard disk can be configured as master in each ide channel. set up to master (not single) the one on the end of the ide cable and set up to slave the one attached to the midlle of the ide cable.
check that both hard drives are properly attached to the cable and that the power cable is properly seated.

when you say disk did you mean cd rom disks or dvd disks?
does it work in other computers? if it doesnt.. you cd/dvd disks may be the problem
are you trying to read a dvd disk on a cd rom only drive... you can't read a dvd in a cd rom drive.
if you cd/dvd rom drive should read the disk you're putting in, check in device manager if your system detects the cd/dvd rom drive. if it doesn't: check the physical connections (reseat ide cable, check jumper configuration for slave and master on your cd/dvd rom drive and check that the power cable is properly seated), check also in device manager the properties of the cd/dvd rom drive and check if it says on device status if the device is working correctly. if it doesn't post the error code that it may give you or google a solution with error code.

suggestion.. be more specific when posting your questions.. that way it will be easier for a solution to be provided as your issue could be interpreted in different ways
