Go to "sears.com", have your model number ready and go to the parts link. You will beable to view an exploded view of your mower and order parts on line if you like.

Go to the above address, type in your model number
917.257280 just like this with a dot not a dash it will locate the tractor for you, go to the list on the left side of the page and select >>38" mower<< at the bottom of the Sub-components list and it will show you a picture of how it looks installed as well as all associated parts

I believe you may have the belt over one or more of the belt retainers next to the pulleys. They are 5 or 6 inches long and about a 1/4 inch in diameter. You have to loosen them when you put the belt on then adjust them to where they are just barely touching the back of the belt. They keep the belt from jumping off.
