Manual focus won't work SONY HDR-HC1 video camera

The manual focus seems to be broken on my video camera (Sony HDR-HC1), I put the switch on manual and try to turn the focus ring and it does not change the focus. Help! What are the steps I can take to test and fix this issue (or determine if I need a new part, or to send somewhere)?
