Engine stalls when clutch/brake pedal is released

I have a murray riding mower about 8 or 9 years old with a 12.5 hp briggs&stratton motor. the motor stalls when the clutch/brake pedal is released, whether it is in neutral or in gear. it also stalls when the blade lever is engaged.

Under the seat, there is a operator presence switch, if this switch fails, the mower will shut off when the brake is released, or put in any gear.

    Under the seat is a safety switch that shuts the mower off when you leave the seat.
    it has most likely popped loose from the seat.
    Reinsert it or replace it if its bad.

    To bypass the safety feature completely :
    1)_Either splice the wires on the switch to keep them permanently crossed.(Recommended)
    This allows my son to mow. ( he doesn't weigh enough to trigger the seat censor.)

    OR

    2)_Smear superglue around the switches button, wait about 30 seconds and the press the button in to permanently keep it pressed.

    Both of these solutions will keep the mower running even in you get off the seat.

    Note: you can do the same for the reverse button. if you are tired of holding it in to go backwards.

carb. float stuck open
Need to remove carb. replace float needle valve and possibly the needle valve seat,
change your oil also
saturated with fuel

SOURCE: i have a 1998 briggs

here is what you do. remove one spark plug and start it up. if it runs reinstall it and remove the other plug and start it up. if it runs on one plug, but not the other, you have a set of bent valve push rods and you are actually running on one cylinder which causes that stalling and no power even though it sounds good. push rods are cheap and easy to replace, but you should leave the fine adjustment to someone who knows what they are doing, and do both sides. common B&S problem.

there is a safety switch underneath the seat thats purpose is to shut the motor off if mower is engaged with no one sitting on the tractor.It sounds like this switch is faulty or there's a bad connection there.

I have a Craftsman DLS 3500 Briggs and Stratton 20 HP, When I engage the cutting blades the engine dies.


first, is this with or without the brake pedal released ??? I would check the seat switch first. Then, if you have an 12 volt blade clutch ( push/pull switch on dashboard ) then I would check it next.

I need the three bolts that attach the motor to the deck on my 42" 14.5hp Murray riding mower and I am not sure of the size without taking opne of the old ones out. Do you have online a manual for...


There are websites like partstree.com or outdoordistributors.com that allow you to enter your mower's model number and you can bring up an illustrated parts drawing, look at those and it will have the numbers and if you are lucky even the sizes. May be able to find on Murray website also the same drawings.

Note if older than 1993 you may not find drawings anywhere, I have not been able to yet for my 1993 Murray 14.5 Hp 42" riding mower.

Also if the engine is the origingal and it is a Briggs and Statton, to find the manufacture date of the mower look for the model-type-code number on the shroud. Sometimes it is stamped sometimes it is on a plate. The last sequence of numbers is the date code. It starts with the last two numbers of the year, followed by the two digit month, then the two digit for the day and then a few other numbers after it. So if the date code is 010427xxxx then the motor was manufactured in 2001, on April 27th. This is the easiest way to get an approximation of a mowers age, if original engine and it is a Briggs and Stratton.

two possible problems. check power from safty switchs, put the lever down under the seat and rock the back tires back and forth until you here a click. then try again. a safty swith is giving you problems

Have a Poulan 27147 model 13.5 38"
Start the mower and release the clutch or brake whichever you call it and the mower will stop. Have replaced the switch and soleniod and it still stalls out. Any solution to this? Been looking for a manual for this model - only 10 yrs old - but no luck.

sounds like you have a safety switch issue, i am the proud owner of 3 different Murray mowers, you have a seat switch, a blade disengage switch, and a clutch pedal switch, depending on model and year, unplug one at a time and re try, need anymore info, email me, niteman87@aol.com :) hope that helps,

The mower will stall when I lift my foot off the brake.


If you have a gear transmission,you have some safety switches. One under the seat. One on the clutch -brake pedal. These switches work together to prevent accidental injury. One may have disconnected or a wire frayed. If one switch has failed it will shut the mower off.

Murray riding mower 12.5 hp briggs & stratton spitting oil & gas out of carb & muffler when trying to start


Drain oil... it is full of gasoline due to a bad float pin and rubber gromet in your carb. When your float pin and gromet fail, gas just keeps flowing into your carburetor, eventually flooding your motor with gas and oil mix.
