It should come apart near the bottom with a normal twist. Remove the cable and holder. Hold the body of the mic with one hand and the ring with the letters M.A.R.K. with the other. Twist it like a jar and you have it open. It looks like you posted 2 years ago, maybe you already figured it out. If not, better late than never.

This mic is sensitive. I have moved in a closet in my house. How do you deal with this mic when it still picks up so much air. What can I do?

Your mic may be sensitive but its gain is set in the mixer or computer to which it's connected. I don't know what you mean by "too much air" but if you mean "room sound" there shouldn't be much in a closet unless it has all hard sound reflecting walls. You will need to provide a better description of the problem.

Does an MXL 990 microphone only work with an inbox?

By "inbox" do you mean a transformer that powers it?
Condenser mics need 48 volts (phantom power) to run, so you normally switch the phantom power button on for the channel you have the condensor mic. plugged into.

Getting alot of static through my mic

I own two MXL 990's and have had no issues with extra noise of any kind. I would suggest checking or replacing the mic cables with new or known good ones. Also I don't know what you are connecting it to but a weak or noisy Phantom Supply could also cause extra noise.

I am trying to record with my mxl 990 micrphone onto my laptop but when i try to record no sound is heard

Hi,
you can't just plug and play with these high end mics. You require a +48v phantom power source from something such as a mixer. Then plug the mic into the mixer and the mixer into the LINE IN on the PC

I've tried several mics: mxl 990, Sure sm58/57, an AKG mic, and I get very low input signal or no signal at all from the mxl 990. The problem is the same regardless of phantom power. Cranking the input...

1. maybe the impedance of you mic did not match to your sound card..
2. sound card did not support you dynamic mic...try to use FET or condenser mic..

Can't operate my MXL 990

If it is an MXL 990 Condenser that comes in the grey case with a shockmount and a black hard mount I can solve your problem. (If it is USB I know nothing about that unit).

This MXL 990 microphone MUST have 48v phantom power in order to operate. If you aren't familiar with the term phantom power read the first link:

Phantom power - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_power
MXL User Guide - http://www.mxlmics.com/support/guides.html

If yours is one of the older MXL 990's it should have an XLR connector on the bottom -
XLR Defined - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XLR_connector

Your mixer (I am guessing its a Peavey, Tascam, Mackie) or something entry level like that may or may not have phantom power. I am guessing not. But if it does, it will have a switch that says 48v phantom power and most likely a green or red LED next to it to show you when its on. This mic will NOT work without phantom power.

Best suggestion: Verify that your mic is the MXL 990 Condenser, if it is it needs 48v phantom power. Check your mixer and see if it has 48v phantom power. The only computer soundcard that I know of that is used by a lot of folks is the M-Audio Delta 1010LT. It has XLR inputs but NO phantom power on it.

There's your answer.

MXL 990 doesn't work

Your other preamp does not have phantom power to supply power to the microphone. All condensor mics like this need phantom power. The Audio Buddy provides phantom power, which is why it was shipped with those condensor mics

Pls help

The MXL 990s requires 48 volts to operate. If your mixer does not have a phantom power option, you will need to purchase a microphone pre-amplifier with phantom power to interface the microphone to your mixer.

MXL 990 has really low output

These are really cheap mics! I have two dozen of them because what I do requires the mic to be expendable. The capsule is pretty fragile and just a little drop or hit to the mic can drastically alter the frequency response and output level. If you record with it and it has a hollow sound I would bet this is what happened. If you can generate white or pink noise out of your system, then record it. Just hold the mic in front of the speaker. Play it back and compare the tone of the recording to what you just heard. Hollow? There you are!
