Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Carrier 90% *** furnace, fires up, runs until circulating fan runs for approximately 60 seconds, then the flame shuts down. The trouble code is 3-4 indicating a flame proving circuit problem. Three cycles of this and then Lock-out. I have replaced the flame proving electrode and cleaned the flame front orifice to no avail.

After much trial and error, I determined that the spade connector contact between the flame sensor ane the wire leading to the circuit board was losing contact. I soldered the male and female spade connector together, and (finally) solved the problem. I originally focused on this solution when after a failure, wiggling the connector would temporarily resolve the problem.

I have had this problem many times. If changing the flame sensor and cleaning the front of the venturi tube did not help. Also check the ground wire that is attatched to the burner assembly. Also, I have found it necessary at times to replace the wire completely from the flame sensor to the ignition board (circuit board). if you have a multi meter that is capable of reading micro amps, put it in series with the flame sensor and you should see 3-5 micro amps dc. If this is not present, check and make sure that the flame is covering the sensor fully.

Hello, if all the burners are not firing up then they must be cleaned out, usually dirt gets in the crossover parts of the burner and the gas cant flow to all the burners and therefore the flame sensor will turn off the furnace for safety. Clean the burners out this should fix the problem.

It sounds to me like your draft motor is probably shuttimg off on thermal overload. They will get to hot and shut down until the motor cools down then run again. But by that time it's caused other trouble so I think you need to replace the motor first and then see what other problems it has caused.I hope this helps you and thanks.

I AM WORKING ON A CARRIER 90% FURNACE. IT WILL NOT FIRE UP. IT SHOWS A 34 CODE. THE IGNITOR DOES NOT ENERGIZE FROM THE BOARD. NO POWER COMING FROM THE BOARD. I HERE A CLICK AS IF IT IS TRYING BUT NO...

Problem: Your furnace will not ignite the gas to produce heat for your home. When a furnace has a bad ignitor what I see most of the time is the following sequence of operation:

1. Thermostat calls for heat.

2. Draft inducer motor starts.

3. Pressure switch attached by a small plastic or rubber tube senses the negative pressure produced by the draft inducer and closes.

4. Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds to a minute before you hear a gas hissing sound. The ignitor did not glow, the flame sensor (a small metal probe about 1/8" in diameter, with a white porcelain base) does not sense the flame, so after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds stops with no ignition of gas to heat your home. Your furnace shuts down and goes into a lock out condition until you turn your power switch back off and on again. Then the sequence starts all over again with no ignition of the gas. Solution: You probably need to purchase and install a new ignitor. I would suggest that you inspect your ignitor closely for cracks. Make sure you do not touch the ignitor with your bare hands. If you do not visually see a crack, then you could have a furnace control board problem or a limit, rollout switch problem. Please see "limits, rollout switches & furnace control boards" further down on this page. The furnace's control board might not be supplying the voltage to the ignitor. If your furnace lights and the gas stays on for 8 to 10 seconds, then shuts right back off, then you need to clean your flame sensor with light sand paper or steel wool. You might need a new flame sensor, but most of the time they can be cleaned an will work well after cleaning.

I would guess that the fan off setting on your limit is set a little to high. If you have the manual you can see what it says about changing the running time for the fan after the burner has shut off look on the control board and you should see two switches, one to set the time for burners to fire before main blower starts and one to set time for fan to run after burners shut off. To help with the problem you are describing set fan run time up so fan wii run longer. Hope this helps. Thaks.

Sounds as though your issue lies within the flame sensor.

The flame sensor senses that there is flame present once there is a call for heat. It sends its signal back the board or ICM and the furnace operates as normal. If no signal is sent, then the furnace automatically shuts down as a safety procedure. The furnace will attempt to light several times before shutting down on a fault code or lockout.

The number 1 reason for flame sensors to fail is they are dirty. Check the sensor for dirt build-up. Clean the sensor with a damp rag or a scratch pad. Inspect the grommets for crackings. Also check and clean all grounds. If this doesn't work, you will need to replace the sensor or call for a service technician to ensure the sensor is the only issue at hand.

Furnace runs but won't ignite.

Error code 12 is blower on after power up. Meaning: after you turn on power to the furnace for aprox. 60-90 seconds the blower will run. The blower should then shut down and the furnace should go through the start up process, providing that the thermostat is set for and calling for heat. If the furnace fails to start after blower shut down there should be a new fault/error code. However if the blower continues to run longer then 90 seconds and continues with the same fault code more then likely the circuit board is bad. Please let me know if this was helpful and give me a rating. Good luck.

Furnace starts properly, then shuts down, led flashes 8 times

The first thing to look at is the flame sense rod.
Shut off power to the furnace, remove, clean sensor with steel wool or sandpaper then reinstall the sensor. Reapply power and it should run properly.
